Recession Procession

by Trade the News staff

Volatility continues to flare up throughout the economy, despite the best efforts of the Fed to appease markets by slashing interest rates 125 basis points in the last ten days of January. The month was one of the worst starts to a year in memory, with the S&P 500 index ending down 6.1% for the month and the Nasdaq down about 9.9% (Nasdaq's worst January ever). A rising tide of negative economic data has led to growing speculation regarding a US recession, with some economists already pronouncing (unofficially) that the recession began in November. Upcoming developments over the next four weeks, including the release of key economic data, more earnings reports and significant political events, could all affect the course of the markets. With the United States facing a weaker dollar and creeping inflation, the bulls may be hoping for strong words at this month's G-7 meeting as well as a bond insurer rescue package to drag the economy back from the brink of recession.
