I read the following by\u00a0Gary Norden and\u00a0www.nordenmethod.com<\/a>\u00a0** the other day in the introductory part and I thought to myself – “How true!” and got permission to share:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Before any trader starts to trade a contract he\/she should learn as much as possible about it. In order to construct a good watchlist you will need to know how your market correlates with other markets; what connections it has with the world around it.\u00a0Some correlations work on many days while others just pop up as important from time to time (e.g. oil for bonds).<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Know about the Participants…<\/div>\n
Who trades the market?\u00a0What is the average proportion of small retail traders vs. larger pros?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Take a moment for example, to think about whether the ES has a higher or lower proportion of retail traders than 10-year Treasuries?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Know about your Sessions…<\/div>\n
Don’t just consider the main session, we should also think about out-of-hours trading.\u00a0We have many clients who trade the ES, for example, during European hours.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Trading correlations can be a greater help also during out-of-hours, but we need to be more watchful of liquidity and two-way flow (discussed later).<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Know about your Expirations…<\/div>\n
Understand the dynamics of your contract around its expiry.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We should stop trading as soon as we see rollover activity until completed, and then move onto the next contract.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Cash settled contracts tend to rollover later than physically settled ones, but you need to learn when your market does this.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Know the News drivers…<\/div>\n
Understand what news events drive your market and when they come out.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We usually don’t want to trade over scheduled news and data announcements.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Know the Holidays…<\/div>\n
Learn the effect of scheduled holidays on your market.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
For example, if you are in the US and are trading the Dax, you need to be aware of German public holidays.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Know the Underlying Market…<\/div>\n
You should be seeking information about your underlying market(s).<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Remember, futures are a derivative.\u00a0They derive their price from the underlying market.<\/div>\n
Basically, learn as much as you can about your market; become an expert in it.\u00a0You would be amazed at how many traders lose money on silly (and avoidable) things related to a lack of knowledge.<\/div>\n
