So far this week, major stock indexes and benchmark interest rate sensitive instruments continued their erratic behavior.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Monday night\u00a0(China\u2019s Tuesday daytime): the Shanghai Composite index fell 5.1%, its worst selloff in more than two years.\u00a0The yuan hit its lowest level since late 2020.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Investors are worried that the strict policies China has implemented to combat its most recent Covid-19 will add to the pressures weighing on China\u2019s economic growth and further disrupt global supply chains.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Tuesday:\u00a0U.S. stock indexes followed China\u2019s with the S&P 500<\/a> closing down \u00b1120 points, or 2.8%.\u00a0The Dow Jones Industrial<\/a> Average declined \u00b1809 points, or 2.4%.\u00a0The Nasdaq<\/a> Composite lost \u00b1514 points, a \u00b14% pull-back its largest one-day percentage decline since September 2020.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Fears about a resurgence of Covid-19 cases in China, and global inflation are weighing on companies and consumers.\u00a0The Federal Reserve\u2019s indications that it will quickly tighten monetary policy are threatening to drag on growth.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Wednesday:\u00a0Federal Reserve governor Lael Brainard won Senate confirmation Tuesday to become the central bank\u2019s vice chairwoman and top adviser to Chairman Jerome Powell.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Fed watchers believe Ms. Brainard\u2019s promotion isn\u2019t likely to change the central bank\u2019s near-term interest-rate policy plans because she has already been serving as a top lieutenant to Mr. Powell.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note<\/a> closed at 2.773%, close to its highest level since 2018.\u00a0Investors have sold bonds in anticipation of higher interest rates.<\/div>\n
