Price Banding<\/h1>\n

The CME Group \u2013 where stock index futures like the\u00a0<\/a>E-mini S&P 500<\/a>,\u00a0E-mini Nasdaq,<\/a>\u00a0E-mini $5 Dow Jones<\/a>\u00a0and other markets trade – has several measures in place to ensure that their markets work in an efficient and orderly manner during volatile market conditions.\u00a0Among the more commonly-known put in place by the CME Group are their price limits and circuit breakers.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Another, maybe less-commonly known, but very important measure to understand is\u00a0price\u00a0banding.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Price banding is a mechanism designed to help prevent erroneous, unintended trades.\u00a0Price banding rejects orders outside a given range, or band.\u00a0Bands are calculated dynamically, meaning they\u2019re constantly moving, based on the last traded price of a market.\u00a0A price band is defined as the highest bid price and lowest ask price from the last traded price within which a non-stop order \u2013 like a limit order \u2013 can be placed.<\/div>\n

For example:<\/div>\n

The price banding for the E-mini S&P 500 is 6 points.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
If the market\u2019s last trading price is\u00a03980.00, its price band is between\u00a03986.00\u00a0(bid),\u00a03974.00\u00a0(ask).\u00a0If a\u00a0BUY LIMIT<\/a>\u00a0order is placed with a\u00a0LIMIT PRICE\u00a0of\u00a03988.00, because the\u00a0LIMIT PRICE\u00a0is outside\/above the upper 6-point price band the order would be rejected.<\/div>\n

If a\u00a0SELL LIMIT<\/a>\u00a0order is placed with a\u00a0LIMIT PRICE\u00a0of\u00a03942.75, because the\u00a0LIMIT PRICE\u00a0is outside\/below the lower 6-point price band the order would also be rejected.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
