Bullet Points: Highlights and Announcements<\/h3>\n

Financials:<\/strong>\u00a0Given Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell\u2019s statements at last week\u2019s\u00a0Economic Policy Symposium in Jackson Hole, where he\u00a0reiterated the Fed.\u2019s commitment to halting inflation and that \u201csome pain\u201d will come to the U.S. economy as a result, U.S. and other global stock markets, while lower this week, have been measured and arguably not anxiety-filled.\u00a0At least for the time being, traders seem to have factored in continued interest rate hikes by our central bank and other countries\u2019 and slower, possibly even recessionary conditions.\u00a0That was\u00a0read into Wednesday\u2019s ADP private payrolls report that showed a deceleration in jobs creation (132,000 in August).<\/p>\n

Next up: the closely watched\u00a0Non-farm payrolls report this Friday, widely considered to be one of the most important measures of the U.S. economy.\u00a0\u00a0A survey of economists\u00a0forecast an increase of 318,000 new jobs (median estimate).<\/em><\/p>\n

Metals:<\/strong>\u00a0Dec. gold traded through $1,700\/oz this morning, marking its longest monthly losing streak in four years, and Dec. silver tumbled to $17.40 intraday \u2013 a more than two-year low \u2013 as traders expect rising interest rates will persist making Treasury bonds and the U.S. dollar more attractive.<\/p>\n

Lumber:<\/strong>\u00a0Rising interest rates and a strong U.S. dollar have weighed on other commodity prices.\u00a0Basis the Nov. futures contract, lumber prices have been slashed by more than half since their early-Feb. highs of \u00b1$1,000\/board foot, trading to $460\/board foot intraday today \u2013 to its life-of-contract low.\u00a0Credit weak demand as well, with a cooling housing market and falling new home construction.<\/p>\n

Energy:\u00a0<\/strong>Crude oil (Dec.) continued it\u2019s steep sell-off this week \u2013 losing \u00b1$10\/barrel over the last three days \u2013 returning to near its mid-August\/5-month lows near $86.00\/barrel.\u00a0The market seems dogged by softening demand with several major cities in China seeing new Covid restrictions, including the total lockdown of Chengdu with \u00b120 million people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
