I\u2019ve received questions about price\u00a0limits or circuit breakers applied to futures contracts, so here\u2019s some clarification:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A price limit is the maximum move permitted for a futures contract.\u00a0\u00a0When markets hit their price limit, different actions\u00a0can\u00a0occur depending on the product being traded.\u00a0Markets may temporarily halt until price limits can be expanded,\u00a0they may\u00a0remain in a limit condition or\u00a0they may\u00a0stop trading for the day, based on regulatory rules.<\/p>\n

The CME Group applies price limits<\/a>\u00a0to many futures contracts across assets classes including agricultural, energy, interest rates, equity index and others.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here are some specifics related to equity index products, including the E-mini S&P 500, the E-mini Nasdaq, the E-mini Dow Jones, the E-mini Russell 2000 and others.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2192\u00a0From\u00a05:00 P.M. to\u00a08:30 A.M. Sundays through Fridays as well as from\u00a03:00 P.M. –\u00a04:00 P.M., Mondays through Fridays, only 7% up-and-down price limits are effective.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2192\u00a0From\u00a08:30 A.M. to\u00a02:25 P.M., Central Time, Mondays through Fridays, 7%, 13%, and 20% price limits are applied to the futures price.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2219\u00a07% price limit trading halt: 15 mins<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2219\u00a013% price limit trading halt: 15 mins<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2219\u00a020% price limit trading halt: rest of day<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2192\u00a0From\u00a02:25 P.M. to\u00a03:00 P.M., only the 20% price limit will be applied to the futures price.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CME Group U.S. equity index price limits are designed to coordinate with circuit breakers provisions as applied by the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The 7%, 13%, and 20% price limits are calculated during the 30 seconds of trading using a volume weighted average price (VWAP), from\u00a02:59:30\u00a0P.M. \u2013\u00a03:00:00\u00a0P.M.<\/p>\n

Note to New Traders:<\/p>\n

The current trading environment is quite volatile and unpredictable to say the least.\u00a0Most of our clearing houses have temporarily raised intraday margin requirements.\u00a0Intraday price swings have been considerable.\u00a0Be aware, be careful, don’t jump into stormy seas if you are not an experienced swimmer.<\/p>\n
