Different grains are traded on the Index, as commodities. Wheat, corn, soybeans, canola and soybean meal are just a few examples. They can be either a short-hedge or a long-hedge. One of the most traded grain futures is corn.

Basically, buying or selling these forms of futures enables the buyers and sellers to lock in prices of the specified grain today for the items that are to be delivered in the future. Therefore, all those who are interested in grains futures must track the performance of the grain on the demand and supply graph as well as its performance on the index. Though it is not tough to understand grains futures, the calculation of risk and returns is something that an average person may leave for an expert to do.

Buy May ’23 / Sell March ‘23 Feeder Cattle: Outlook
Because food (after 2-3 months, calves are weaned off milk and fed a diet of grain, hay and water) is a primary but fluctuating cost, livestock producers want to feed as many animals as possible when feed is most plentiful. So, cattle feedlot operators replenish their usually low cattle herds in October & November when corn becomes readily available at usually harvest-low prices. Those young animals will gain weight only slowly during winter and typically reach market weight in April. The result is that demand for feeders remains sluggish in March, but surges in May.

Here’s a futures spread idea from our friends at Moore Research ( FREE TRIAL ESPECIALLY for Cannon’s clients and blog readers!). This is a calendar spread in lean hogs. Moore Research specializes in seasonal research designed to anticipate future price movement rather than constantly react to an endless stream of news. Like the annual cycle of weather from warm to cold and back to warm, annual cycles in supply and demand can produce seasonal price movement. This calendar spread in lean hogs is an idea in that concept. Retail pork consumption peaks around July/August, at the tail end of the low point in slaughter. With cold storage inventories reduced by end of August and slaughter still low, the market bids October futures higher over April, when stocks near their peak. Contact your Cannon Broker for additional assistance.

Managing Expectations for the Non Farm Payroll Release.

This Friday, we will get the market moving report before the open @ 8:30a.m. EDT. It’s important to understand that this information in this format has already been digested by or priced into the market. These opinions are published by Econoday.com. When the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the actual numbers, the market may violently react if the numbers in each or several of the below categories differ from the consensus viewpoints. If the numbers are in line with expectations, the markets will typically offer limited change in their pricing of the affected asset(s).

Consensus Outlook
A 250,000 rise is Econoday’s consensus for nonfarm payroll growth in July which would be much lower than June’s as-expected 372,000. Average hourly earnings in June cooled to 0.3 percent on the month and to 5.1 percent on the year with steady showings expected for July, at 0.3 and 5.0 percent.
Definition
The most closely watched of all economic indicators, the employment situation is a set of monthly labor market indicators based on two separate reports: the establishment survey which tracks 650,000 worksites and offers the nonfarm payroll and average hourly earnings headlines and the household survey which interviews 60,000 households and generates the unemployment rate.
Nonfarm payrolls track the number of part-time and full-time employees in both business and government. Average hourly earnings track employee pay while the average workweek, also part of the establishment survey, tracks the number of hours worked. The report’s private payroll measure excludes government workers.
The unemployment rate measures the number of unemployed as a percentage of the labor force. In order to be counted as unemployed, one must be actively looking for work. Other commonly known data from the household survey include the labor supply and discouraged workers. Why Investors Care

What You Need to Know Before Trading June 30th by Mark O’Brien:

Grains: The U.S. Department of Agriculture will release its survey of planted acreage for corn, wheat and Soybeans at 11:00 A.M, Central Time. At the same time the agency will also publish data on existing grain stocks
In recent years several large misjudgments have caused big moves in Chicago futures.
Corn will be in the brightest spotlight as just under half of U.S. corn was planted as of mid-May, well below the longer-term average near 70%. One of the big questions the report will spell out is whether high and rising prices were enough to lure producers to plant more corn than intended, or if steep production costs and wet spring weather had them backing off.
Analysts polled ahead of the survey peg U.S. corn plantings at 89.9 million acres, up slightly from 89.5 million in the March survey. U.S. soybean acres are seen landing at 90.4 million in Thursday’s report, still a record but below March’s 91 million-acre peg.
More grains: First Notice Day for grains is tomorrow, June 30. If that escaped your memory and you’re holding long July grains, your clearing firm may be sending you a formal delivery notice. That’s a bona fide headache if you’re not prepared to deliver 5,000 bushels of corn, soybean, wheat or oats – per contract – to the Chicago Board of Trade! If this is you, contact your broker immediately!
Financials: Due to the Dept. of Labor Statistics’ release date rules, this coming first Friday of the month will not see the release of the June unemployment report. The Monday holiday (Independence Day) pushed the report to next Friday, July 8.
Crypto: Coinbase Derivatives Exchange (formerly FairX) launched its first listed crypto derivatives product on June 27, 2022: Nano Bitcoin futures contract (BIT), with each contract sized at 1/100th of a bitcoin. It is a monthly cash-settled contract.

Enhance Your Trading, Futures Spreads 101

Futures spreads are a way to get involved in trending markets at a lower margin cost and often times can give the trader staying power to last weeks if not months. If you were thinking about entering the Crude market, or the Grain markets but were psyched out by the volatility of an outright long or short futures position. Futures Time Spreads or Calendar spreads where the trader goes long one month and simultaneously goes short another month of the same commodity is a way to engage your margin dollars in a trend.
We use the futures contract symbol, in the case of Soybeans ZS then FTS for futures Time Spread ZS FTS +N22,-Z22 if you look at the chart the symbol is highlighted upper left and the current price is 1.78 or $1.78 cents. that is the differential between the two contracts most recent prices today
