Markets Await Key Jobs Report

market

Markets were mixed Thursday as traders positioned ahead of Friday’s closely watched U.S. employment data.

Stock index futures remained strong, with the E-mini S&P 500 (+1.1%) and E-mini Nasdaq (+1.3%) holding near record highs. Gold (+1.9%), Silver (+2.5%), and Bitcoin (+5.6%) also posted solid gains, signaling continued investor interest in both safe-haven and risk assets.

Commodities

In commodities, Crude Oil rose 1.3%, while agricultural markets were weaker, led by declines in Wheat (-2.9%), Sugar (-3.6%), and Cotton (-2.6%).

Attention now turns to Friday’s economic calendar, highlighted by:

  • German Factory Orders
  • Eurozone Retail Sales
  • U.S. Average Hourly Earnings
  • U.S. Non-Farm Payrolls
  • U.S. Unemployment Rate

The Non-Farm Payrolls report is expected to drive volatility across stocks, bonds, currencies, metals, and energy markets as traders look for clues on the strength of the U.S. economy and the Federal Reserve’s next move.

Bloomberg Commodity Index

The Bloomberg Commodity Index is a weighted index of commodities from the grains, meats, energies, metals, and softs sectors. The weekly chart broke out of its extended range last fall and completed three upside PriceCount objectives. After correcting lower, the chart is now challenging its spring high. At this point, new sustained highs would project a possible run to the low percentage fourth objective near 176.

The PriceCount study is a tool that can help to project the distance of a move in price. The counts are not intended to be an ‘exact’ science but rather offer a target area for the four objectives which are based off the first leg of a move with each subsequent count having a smaller percentage of being achieved.

It is normal for the chart to react by correcting or consolidating at an objective and then either resuming its move or reversing trend. Best utilized in conjunction with other technical tools, PriceCounts offer one more way to analyze charts and help to manage your positions and risk.
