How Crude Oil Prices Affect Gas Prices

There are a few different aspects that factor into how crude oil prices affect what consumers pay at the pump. Oil is directly affected by geopolitical events, weather patterns, distribution costs, supply, demand and State and Federal taxes, to name a few. As the aforementioned forces are unpredictable and as they become more volatile, so becomes crude oil. Understanding each factor and the role it plays with respects to the rise and fall in prices, may help someone understand how to utilize the information to make better trading decisions.

Supply

First and foremost supply is affected by various socioeconomic and political factors within and around the region of origin. Also, OPEC, an organization commenced in 12 of the top oil producing companies and producing just fewer than 50% of the world’s oil supply, regulate their portion of crude oil produced. Often OPEC will be in positions to sell or barter away the oil they produce in exchange for currency or other assets that will benefit their interests. The United States itself houses around 700 million barrels in its Strategic Petroleum Reserves for use in the event of political dissensions with oil producing nations, as well as for emergencies such as natural disaster affected regions of the country.

Demand

The driving forces behind the demand for crude oil can be a number of factors. The most obvious, of course, is the rate and amount of oil each country uses. According to the CIA World Fact book, the United States tops of the market at 21%, the EU uses 15% of the world’s oil and China consumes 11%. As countries develop, particularly within their middle class infrastructure, this creates more consumers and more consumers using vehicles, driving the demand higher. On the back end of developments like this, oil refineries must adjust production to suit the growing need, which also incurs a higher cost in that production.

Hello Traders,

For 2014 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

Monthly unemployment numbers coming out tomorrow morning, 7:30 AM central time. This is definitely a market moving report that normally injects high volatility into indices, financials, currencies, metals and even the energies.

I personally do NOT trade until after the report and this is what I recommend my clients but as long as you are aware and ready, you can make your own decisions.

Below you will see a 1 minute chart of the mini SP 500 from the last monthly unemployment back in February 7th 2014 just to get an idea of the moves prior and after the report, notice the 26 point move during the 1 minute bar right when the numbers came out!!!:

EPH4 - E mini 500, Max 14, 1 Min.

Walk Before You Run

By Cannon Trading staff

The image of a successful futures trader is that of a lone wolf surveying the landscape looking for an opportunity to attack and seize quick and substantial profits. We all know about the potential for making a fortune in the futures markets. Yet, few do so. Why is that? What are some of the common pitfalls that prevent this dream from becoming a reality for most traders?

One of the most prevalent misconceptions for inexperienced traders is that they believe themselves to be smarter than the rest of the market participants. They under estimate the qualifications and abilities of the rest of the futures markets professionals. This business of trading is dominated by very dedicated, resourceful professionals who have invested lots of time and assets into their pursuit of trading profits. Competing against these seasoned professionals is not impossible but going it alone, especially initially, is usually not the most prudent course of action for new traders.

When we were children, we learned to walk before we learned to run. This is true for most of our life experiences. We played t-ball before we played baseball. We took lessons from Arthur Murray before we entered dance competitions. We watched cooking shows or read cookbooks before we attempted to deep fry our first turkey. So, why do so many novice traders think that they should enter into the world of futures trading without the support of an experienced futures broker? Why, armed with their computers and quote systems do they think that they are equipped to go it alone and be successful? It isn’t logical. It goes counter to our collective life experiences.

If your goal is to trade independently, why not do so after acquiring valuable experience and insight by working with a seasoned professional broker? Someone who is already fully engaged in the futures markets. Why not begin by using a mentor, a teacher, an advisor who can supply ideas, guidelines, disciplines, and insights that the novice trader could not otherwise be exposed to? We all learned to drive with the help of an instructor, why not approach the futures markets in a similar fashion? Your hard earned capital is at stake. Getting an education can be a very expensive process, especially in the futures business. Why not take advantage of the help offered by an experienced professional? Help like this can shorten a new trader’s learning curve and reduce the cost of his or her tuition for this education.
