U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report Wednesday, August 12th, 8:30 AM ET.

cpi

Tomorrow’s economic calendar features several notable releases, but all eyes will be on the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report at 8:30 AM ET.

The CPI and Core CPI numbers are among the most closely watched inflation indicators because they can significantly influence expectations for Federal Reserve policy, interest rates, and overall market sentiment. A higher-than-expected reading could revive inflation concerns, potentially pressuring stock index futures while supporting the U.S. dollar and pushing Treasury yields higher. Conversely, softer inflation data could increase expectations for future rate cuts and provide support for equities.

Markets likely to see heightened volatility following the CPI release include:

  • E-mini S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures
  • Treasury futures
  • Gold and silver futures
  • U.S. Dollar Index futures
  • Interest rate futures

Later in the morning, energy traders will shift their attention to the EIA Crude Oil Inventories report at 10:30 AM ET. Changes in crude oil stockpiles often trigger immediate price reactions in crude oil futures, particularly when inventory levels deviate significantly from analyst expectations. Traders should also keep an eye on gasoline and distillate inventories for additional clues regarding energy demand.

December Soymeal

December meal satisfied its first downside PriceCount objective off from the July high. It would be normal to get a near term reaction from this level in the form of a corrective trade. If the chart can sustain further weakness, a trade below the July reactionary low would formally negate the remaining unmet upside count while the second count to the downside would project a possible slide to the $302 area.

The PriceCount study is a tool that can help to project the distance of a move in price. The counts are not intended to be an ‘exact’ science but rather offer a target area for the four objectives which are based off the first leg of a move with each subsequent count having a smaller percentage of being achieved.

It is normal for the chart to react by correcting or consolidating at an objective and then either resuming its move or reversing trend. Best utilized in conjunction with other technical tools, PriceCounts offer one more way to analyze charts and help to manage your positions and risk.
