CPI Reaction: Why Did Markets Sell Off?

cpi

Today’s post-CPI selloff highlights how markets often react not just to the inflation number itself, but to what it may mean for future Federal Reserve policy. Even when CPI is not dramatically above expectations, traders tend to reassess interest rate expectations, liquidity conditions, and overall risk appetite.

The result was a broad risk-off move across many markets:

  • E-mini Nasdaq (NQ) fell 1.90%
  • E-mini S&P 500 (ES) declined 1.09%
  • Gold dropped 1.45%
  • Silver was hit hard, falling 6.10%
  • Bitcoin lost 1.91%

Meanwhile, defensive assets caught a bid, with 30-Year Treasury Bonds gaining 0.45%, suggesting some investors shifted capital toward perceived safety.

From a trend perspective, the longer-term uptrends in both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq remain intact despite today’s weakness, but traders should pay close attention to whether buyers step back in over the next couple of sessions.

What To Watch Tomorrow

Tomorrow’s key event arrives at 8:30 AM ET, when several important U.S. economic reports hit simultaneously:

1. Retail Sales

A major gauge of consumer spending.

  • Stronger-than-expected numbers could suggest the economy remains resilient.
  • Strong spending may also reinforce concerns that inflation pressures could persist.
  • Equities may react negatively if traders believe stronger growth delays future Fed easing.

2. Producer Price Index (PPI)

PPI measures inflation at the wholesale level.

  • Higher PPI could reignite inflation concerns after today’s CPI-driven volatility.
  • A softer reading could help stabilize risk assets and support a relief rally.

3. Unemployment Claims

Labor market data remains critical.

  • Lower claims suggest a strong labor market.
  • Higher claims would indicate potential slowing economic momentum and could influence rate expectations.

4. Philly Fed Manufacturing Index

Provides a snapshot of business activity and economic momentum.

  • Strong manufacturing data would support the growth narrative.
  • Weak data could increase recession concerns.

In addition, both natural Gas and Crude Oil numbers are due out tomorrow!

Markets on Our Radar

Treasury Bonds (ZB):

  • Continuing to attract attention after today’s gains. If tomorrow’s data disappoints, bonds could extend higher.

Gold and Silver:

  • Precious metals suffered sharp losses, particularly silver. Traders will be watching whether today’s move was liquidation-driven or the start of a deeper correction.

Equity Index Futures (ES/NQ):

  • Tomorrow’s 8:30 AM ET economic releases could determine whether today’s decline becomes a one-day shakeout or the beginning of a larger pullback.

Crude Oil:

  • Oil continues to hold up relatively well, closing higher despite broader market weakness. Energy markets may react more to inventory data later in the day.

Bottom Line

Tomorrow has the potential to be another high-volatility session. With Retail Sales, PPI, and Jobless Claims all released before the cash open, traders should be prepared for significant movement in stock index futures, Treasury bonds, precious metals, and the U.S. dollar. After today’s CPI-driven selloff, the market will be looking for confirmation: was this simply profit-taking, or the start of a broader risk-off move?

December Heating Oil

December Heating Oil corrected after completing its third upside PriceCount objective last month. Now, the chart is challenging the contract high where a breakout into new sustained highs would project a possible run to the low percentage fourth upside objective to the 6.40 area.

The PriceCount study is a tool that can help to project the distance of a move in price. The counts are not intended to be an ‘exact’ science but rather offer a target area for the four objectives which are based off the first leg of a move with each subsequent count having a smaller percentage of being achieved.

It is normal for the chart to react by correcting or consolidating at an objective and then either resuming its move or reversing trend. Best utilized in conjunction with other technical tools, PriceCounts offer one more way to analyze charts and help to manage your positions and risk.
