Trading tip for today:
Entering trades using a STOP order.
Most retail clients I work with will enter trades either at market or using a limit order ( better price than current market price), however, there are times that depending on your trading strategy , entering the trade on a stop order might be better.
Example, you are looking for momentum and making a few ticks and you feel that the current resistance on natural gas is 3.570 and in this hypothetical example the market is trading at 3.550.
You place a buy stop order to enter the market at 3.573 because you want to see the resistance violated and you are looking for possible continuation and follow through if that happens.
If the market does not brake the resistance line in this “educational example”, you dont get in the trade. If it does, then your buy stop will trigger you long at best market price.
Some traders will take this a step further and use a buy stop/limit. example buy stop 3.573 / limit 3.575 meaning fill me if we break 3.573 but no worse than 3.575. In this case you are willing to “miss the trade” but you know what is your predefined slippage.

Day Trading 202: Tight Stops? Wide Stops? Which One Should I Use?
Entry signals are very important but just as important if not more is trade management.

Today I decided to touch more on an educational feature rather than provide a certain market outlook. Many of my clients and blog readers know that when it comes to short term trading I am a fan of adjusting your trading technique/ game plan according to your assessment of the type of trading day that is developing in front of you.
Many new and advanced traders spend HOURS on looking for entry signals. Back testing historical data, creating algorithms to use and much more. I know. I am one of these traders.
Trade management consists of many factors. Some are psychological and some are more mathematical and many are in between. Some of the basic elements of trade management before even entering the trade are: What will my stop loss be**? will i use a stop loss**? What will my target be? will I use a target or just trail the trade if it goes my way?
In between, take a look at the price action on the daily chart for crude oil futures. After a major, long sell off, the market has recovered a bit the last few sessions with first major resistance at 55.73

Volatility seems to have slowed down a bit, after many consecutive days of extreme and fast moves.
I think that the markets are “energy” and the participants are humans even if it is the humans behind the ALGOS and hence the extreme volatility got the markets tired and we may see a bit of slow down in the volatility.
Markets have and will go between periods of higher volatility, lower volatility and “normal” volatility.
understand it, observe it and adjust your trading if needed accordingly.
U.S. Shutdown Update
Highlights
January 8, 2019
Today’s international trade report, like yesterday’s report on factory orders, will be delayed due to the government shutdown. Treasury’s monthly budget statement that was set for Friday will also not be released. The Labor Department is open and will post today’s JOLTS report as well as Thursday’s jobless claims and Friday’s consumer price reports. The Federal Reserve is not affected by the shutdown and will post minutes from the December FOMC on Wednesday.
In between, take a look at the price action on the daily chart for Dollar Index which in my opinion been a moving force behind many of the markets across the board.

We have Fed governors speaking…..

Your New Year Trading Resolution?
Trading futures is an alluring business that allows an individual a lifestyle filled with many freedoms not available to most working people. This business requires traders to posses a unique set of qualities. The most critical quality a trader needs to have is discipline. Discipline trumps knowledge. It trumps experience. In fact, without discipline very few traders survive to have enough experience to draw upon as an asset in their trading. The need for discipline is amplified by the very structure of futures trading. The leverage available in futures trading amplifies every decision that a trader makes. Every decision, Good or bad!
Everyday life requires us to constantly make decisions. Do I buy the chicken breasts at $4.95 a pound, or do I buy the hamburger at $3.95 a pound. These types of decisions are non-leveraged decisions, so the impact overall is minimal. We are not buying or selling 400,000 pounds of hamburger as we do when we trade 10 contracts of cattle, while “paying” only a fraction of its total value. In trading futures, one needs a trading plan…
In between a look at the daily gold chart below. The yellow giant woke up in response to tremendous volatility in stock indices and overall feeling of uncertainty and perhaps the weakness in Bitcoin.
