What Futures Traders Should Watch This Week

Earnings, Stocks, Fuel, Single Stock Futures (SSF)

By Mark O’Brien, Senior Broker

This week (July 27th – July 31st), earnings season will see a bonanza of mega-cap reports, particularly in the closely-watched energy and tech. sectors. Meta, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft all report next week, as do energy giants Chevron, Exxon and Shell.

Also on the docket: Kevin Warsh will chair his second FOMC meeting Tue. and Wed.

The war in Iran will certainly continue to dominate the headlines as hostilities have persisted and expanded with this evening marking the 13th night of military strikes.

The Red Sea joined the Strait of Hormuz as the second choke point in international shipping and President Trump threatened a major new escalation, stating he is weighing whether to launch a “massive attack” on the Islamic Republic that would be “bigger than ever before.”

Iran has shown little sign of bowing to U.S. demands.

What are Single Stock Futures?

Single Stock futures (SSF) are contracts derived from specific stocks. While trading stocks, ETFs or cryptocurrency involves buying and selling the assets directly, a futures contract is a legally binding agreement to buy or sell a standardized asset on a specific date or during a specific month in the future.

  • Contract size: Each Single Stock futures contract represents 100 shares of the underlying stock.
  • Tick size: The minimum price movement (tick) is 0.01 points, which equals a value of $1.00 per tick.
  • Trading venue: These contracts trade on a transparent central limit order book (CLOB) with the deep liquidity of CME Group markets.

Key benefits of Single Stock futures

1. Capital efficiency

In traditional stock trading, you might pay the full value of the shares (e.g., $72,500 for 100 shares of a $725 stock). In the futures market, you only post a performance bond, or margin, which is a fraction of the total value.

Note: While this structure can amplify potential gains, it also amplifies potential losses. Risk management is critical.

2. Ease of going short

  • Stocks: Shorting may require borrowing shares from a broker if a trader doesn’t already own the stock.
  • Single Stock Futures: A market participant can go short simply by selling a contract, making it a more streamlined tool for hedging or expressing a bearish view.

3. Extended trading hours

Unlike traditional stock market hours, Single Stock futures offer nearly 24-hour access (23 hours a day, 5 days a week), allowing for flexible position management in response to overnight market news.

4. Financial settlement

Unlike stocks, which can be held indefinitely, futures have an expiration date. Single Stock futures are listed on a quarterly cycle (March, June, September, December) and are financially settled.

  • Settlement process: At expiration, profit or loss is settled in cash rather than the physical delivery of shares.
  • Price alignment: The final settlement price is determined by the official closing price of the stock on its primary exchange.

Futures 102: The Daily Briefing by Cannon

Every morning, the world’s biggest banks and macro strategists publish where markets are headed. The rest of the world waits for the headline.

That intelligence stays locked inside trading desks, institutional terminals, and private client portals — accessible only to the few who pay for the privilege, and even they only get what they pay for.

This briefing changes that ( 100% FREE on Cannon’s website!!). Every morning we scour the open web and aggregate everything that matters — pulling from publicly available sources so you never have to — and distill it into one clear, readable edition you can get through before your first coffee is finished.

No terminals. No subscriptions. No private portals. Just everything the market is saying, gathered in one place, every morning before the bell.

September Dollar Index

The September Dollar satisfied its third upside PriceCount objective and corrected. At this point, IF the chart can resume its rally with new sustained highs, we are left with the low percentage fourth upside count to aim for near 107.

The PriceCount study is a tool that can help to project the distance of a move in price. The counts are not intended to be an ‘exact’ science but rather offer a target area for the four objectives which are based off the first leg of a move with each subsequent count having a smaller percentage of being achieved.

It is normal for the chart to react by correcting or consolidating at an objective and then either resuming its move or reversing trend. Best utilized in conjunction with other technical tools, PriceCounts offer one more way to analyze charts and help to manage your positions and risk.
