“Cut Your Losses Short” Advice from an Ex Floor Broker

Dear Futures Trader,

Cut Your Losses Short – Quick but important advice by John Thorpe, Senior Broker and ex floor broker:

As Brokers we see too many self directed accounts under stress because losses are allowed to run.
I am not quite sure what the logic is, or even if there is logic attached to the decision to hang on to losing trade Ideas, and many times doubling up or even tripling up on the losing position. Invariably, when there is no more money left, the client is forced out only to see the market finally turn.
One of the traders Jack D. Schwager interviewed for his first Market Wizards book had this quote and a dose of reality.
I tend to cut bad trades as soon as possible, forget them, and then move on to new opportunities. The elements of good trading are: (1) cutting losses, (2) cutting losses, and (3) cutting losses. If you follow these three rules, you may have a chance. – Ed Seykota

FOMC Reaction in the Futures Market & Support and Resistance Levels 11.04.2021

Dear Futures Trader,

Get Real Time updates and more on our private FB group!

FOMC came out and stocks reacted with another leg up – what’s next?

FEDERAL RESERVE BEGAN
TAPPERING ITS $120 BILLION A MONTH PROGRAM.
$10 BILLION A MONTH OF
TREASURIES
$5 BILLION A MONTH OF
MORTGAGE BACKED SECURITIES
WAS:
$80 BILLION OF TREASURIES
$40 BILLION OF MORTGAGE BACKED
$1.44 TRILLION FOR THE YEAR
Gold sold off before hand and only bounced slightly.
Bonds sold off slightly.
Crude sold off the most but in my opinion it was API/ OPEC related and not FOMC related.
Many times, the real reaction to FOMC comes out the next day so price action, asset allocation across the different markets is important to watch.

Trading Tips for FOMC Day Tomorrow & Support and Resistance Levels 11.03.2021

Dear Futures Trader,

Get Real Time updates and more on our private FB group!

FOMC Statement tomorrow:

Interest Rates/Credit Markets – Traders expect the Fed to detail tapering of asset purchases at the FOMC meeting this week.
Traders will pay close attention to the headline change in non-farm payrolls. The expected number is 400,000, up from 194,000 in September. A weak jobs number could have traders positioning a bit sooner for a fed fund rate increase.
Goldman Sachs thinks the Fed will raise its benchmark from a range of zero to 0.25% soon after it stops tapering its asset-purchase program. A second increase will follow in November 2022, and the central bank will then raise rates two times a year after that.
We are expecting the Fed to concede to inflation cryptically in the next few months. Plan on hearing more about multi-year low inflation, historically low interest rates, and only a tiny whiff of inflation.
The following are my PERSONAL suggestions on trading during FOMC days:
·    Reduce trading size
·    Be extra picky = no trade is better than a bad trade
·    Choose entry points wisely. Look at longer time frame support and resistance for entry. Take the approach of entering at points where you normally would have placed protective stops. Example, trader x looking to go long the mini SP at 4325.00 with a stop at 4319.00, instead “stretch the price bands” due to volatility and place an entry order to buy at 4319.75 and place a stop a few points below in this hypothetical example ( consider current volatility along with support and resistance levels).
·    Expect the higher volatility during and right after the announcement
·    Expect to see some “vacuum” ( low volume, big zigzags) right before the number.
·    Consider using automated stops and limits attached to your entry order as the market can move very fast at times.
·    Keep in mind statement comes out at 1 Pm Central time, the news conference which dissects the language comes out 30 minutes later so the volatility window stretches out.
·    Know what the market was expecting, learn what came out and observe market reaction for clues
·    Be patient and be disciplined
·    If in doubt, stay out!!

Trading Wisdom and Support & Resistance Levels 11.02.2021

Dear Futures Trader,

My colleague John Thorpe, Senior Futures Broker, wanted to share the following with everyone:
I would venture to guess that any futures trader who drills down into the nuts and bolts of fundamentals, technicals, astronomy, astrology, quantum mechanics, or any other academic pursuit associated with trading has a Library of books from well-silvered authors. One of my favorites, who has put out quite a bit of work over the past 50 years, is Jack D. Schwager. I’ll share one of his time honored quotes with you today.
“One of my favorite patterns is the tendency for the markets to move from relative lows to relative highs and vice versa every two to four days. This pattern is a function of human behavior. It takes several days of a market rallying before it looks really good. That’s when everyone wants to buy it, and that’s the time when the professionals, like myself, are selling. Conversely, when the market has been down for a few days, and everyone is bearish, that’s the time I like to be buying.”

Day Trading 201: Using Tick/Volume charts and Oscillators for Scalping

Using tick charts and oscillators for day-trading (by Ilan Levy-Mayer VP of Cannon Trading and CTA at Levex.net )
I really don’t think anyone has found a “perfect way” to day-trade.
Different techniques work well in different market environment.
In this week short educational feature, I will touch on one technique you can add to your trading arsenal. This technique works better on choppy, two sidedway and/or volatile markets. It does NOT work well when the market has a strong trend.
The chart below illustrates a few principals I like:
  1. It uses a tick chart rather than a time chart. I like tick charts ( range bar, volume charts, renko) better when day-trading shorter time frames for the simple reason it already includes a big factor in the market, VOLUME. If you are using a 5 minute chart for example, you may get signals simply because time “has passed” and certain indicators you are using adopt certain values. When using tick charts during periods where there are lots of movement, you won’t have to wait until your time frame bar closes to get your signal, volume becomes a bigger more important part of your trading decision.
  2. The other part for this trading approach is to use overbought/ oversold indicators in an attempt to catch exhuastion in selling or buying and catch the counter trend move. Sometimes that move will be minor, sometimes it will be a trend reversal and at other times just a little pause in a strong trend….no crystal balls here, just another tool to observe and consider in your trading. In the PDF you will see the same indicators, same market, same time frame BUT using different type of charts…..

*Heads up: Start trading January beans – November beans entering first notice day.

Gold Daily Chart below…..

Potential long signal was generated today( based on personal technical factors I use) – Looking at the quote below, my biggest battle in this hypothetical example would be:
  1. Entry level ( market? wait for lower price? enter if price breaks above?)
  2. Exit in case of loss
  3. Exit in case of profit
  4. Trade size?
  5. If at a loss will I exit all? or in parts?
  6. If profit achieved will I exit part of the trade? ( assuming I am trading more than 1 contract or perhaps MICROS)
  7. Do I need to bring stop to breakeven at any point ( if certain profit achieved?)
Obviously the answer to all of the above will change from trader to trader but bringing these points up can hopefully help you approach trading from a different angle.
“Every battle is won or lost before it is ever fought.”
Sun Tzu
The Art of War
This passage – dating back the 6th century B.C. – can aptly be applied to trading futures. Prepare for each trade. Set your risk. If the initial outcome is favorable, use your enemy’s resources (move your stop) to sustain your trading.
Don’t engage in extended battles (over trade) and consume your resources (money, time, mental energy).
Your “enemy,” (the market) only has the power to destroy your account if you let it.
