Trading 201: Learn to Lose, Learn to Step Away with Profits and Losses

Important NOTE: With The Recent Volatility Across Markets, We Have Seen Margins Increase In Some Markets As Well As Wild Swings And Extreme Volatility In Many Markets.
For Some, It Can Cost The Full Account Value But Doesn’t Need To. These Volatile Times Require MAJOR Adjustments In How You Approach Trading And Risk Management. I Hope This Article Helps And I Encourage You To Utilize Our Brokers And The Knowledge They Have To Assist You.. Contact Us
Many different factors go into trading. Too many to discuss efficiently in one blog post. Some relate to trading techniques, other to money management, mental aspect, risk capital and much more.
But one that sticks in my eyes is the inability to accept a loss. I see many clients who can make money and have days where they make money but when they lose, they lose much more, sometimes even losing control and losing a big portion of their account.
I am not sure how a trader can embed this into their trading mind, BUT in my opinion if you train your brain to expect losses, understand losses and that losing days will happen, you will increase your chances of surviving in this business, which in return will actually give you a chance to succeed….
Losses are part of trading and as long as your losses are part of the plan and are quantified in advance and you can adhere to your rules, then you have a chance. I think it’s easy when traders are winning…making money etc. Much harder when you lose or down. your brain starts playing tricks on you…it tells you to double down, maybe reverse even though your analysis does not say so….all of a sudden you start pulling trades out of instinct, fear rather than a calculated plan that has solid risk/ reward.
If a trader learns how to lose, to accept losses, to have realistic expectations, then he/ she can avoid having one of those terrible days when traders can lose almost of all their account.
Also, while a bit easier in my mind, a day trader should also step away when he reached a predefined profit target for the trading day. In my humble opinion, the more you day trade, the more fatigued you become and larger chances for errors.
I went into this subject and detailed day trading money management in an article I wrote a few years back for SFO magazine.

Spotlight on the Fed / Economy

By Mark O’Brien, Senior Broker
Right up to yesterday’s Producer Price Index, the U.S. economy has posted inflation measurements not seen in four decades. And yet, stocks and bonds continue to rally (the latter an inverse relationship to interest rates) and gold and silver remain under pressure.
Reading into this, from the Fed.’s standpoint (and they look at numerous other data points to guide their policy), they have felt they can remain cautious in their stance on raising interest rates – at least until pandemic-related influences on the economy abate (think supply chain shortages and resulting higher demand and prices for goods). With that said, the thinking on rate policy has indeed begun to stir. The argument that inflation is mostly transitory has been challenged – by rising wages and pretty resilient energy prices – a category traditionally kept outside core inflation measurements. It seems the last several FOMC meetings have been deemed the defining moment for the Fed. and their stance for the future of the U.S. economy. Stay tuned.

Suggestions to Help you Trade FOMC Tomorrow; Introducing Mini Ether & Support and Resistance Levels 12.15.2021

Get Real Time updates and more on our private FB group!

FOMC Statement tomorrow:

The following was written by my colleague, John Thorpe, an ex floor broker and a Senior Broker with Cannon Trading:
Since the depths of the pandemic, the Fed has been buying U.S. Treasuries and agency mortgage-backed securities in the open to signal its commitment to easy money policies. The Feds balance sheet has more than doubled during the Pandemic, from just under 4 trillion to nearly 9 trillion U.S. dollars. At the November Fed meeting , the governors had for the first time admitted that inflation may not be “transitory” and charted a path to “gradually” taper purchases with a target of mid 2022 to wind down the necessary taper .“If the market perceives that the Fed is behind the curve in controlling inflation, it would lead to higher inflation expectations and long-term interest rate hikes, potentially weakening the dollar and pressuring asset values,” said Madhavi Bokil, senior vice president at Moody’s Investors Service. In lieu of a gaudy CPI number recently at 6.8 and PPI increased by the largest amount in recorded economic history.
The market is looking for the Fed to acknowledge the existence of inflation in clearer terms than the November statement and the need to decelerate asset purchases and accelerating the “Taper” in an attempt to prevent a flat yield curve between the 2 yr and 10 yr notes. If this portion of the yield curve flattens or turns negative, this typically signals a recession. It has narrowed in recent weeks to a spread of only .75. This meeting is a very important one and so far this week, the equity markets are reacting to a potential need to accelerate the taper, an admission by the FED that they may be nervous about their inability to control inflation and an impending recession.

The following are my PERSONAL suggestions on trading during FOMC days:

·    Reduce trading size
·    Be extra picky = no trade is better than a bad trade
·    Choose entry points wisely. Look at longer time frame support and resistance for entry. Take the approach of entering at points where you normally would have placed protective stops. Example, trader x looking to go long the mini SP at 4325.00 with a stop at 4319.00, instead “stretch the price bands” due to volatility and place an entry order to buy at 4319.75 and place a stop a few points below in this hypothetical example ( consider current volatility along with support and resistance levels).
·    Expect the higher volatility during and right after the announcement
·    Expect to see some “vacuum” ( low volume, big zigzags) right before the number.
·    Consider using automated stops and limits attached to your entry order as the market can move very fast at times.
·    Keep in mind statement comes out at 1 Pm Central time, the news conference which dissects the language comes out 30 minutes later so the volatility window stretches out.
·    Know what the market was expecting, learn what came out and observe market reaction for clues
·    Be patient and be disciplined
·    If in doubt, stay out!!

Trading 201: Trading During Rollover

Rollover Notice for U.S. Stock Index, Currency and Financial Futures
Heads up traders! We’re approaching important dates on the trading calendar.
Monday, December 13th is Last Trading Day for December currency futures. It is of the utmost importance for currency traders to exit all December futures contracts and start trading the next quarterly futures contract and the new front month: March ’22. Currency futures are DELIVERABLE contracts. By holding any December futures contracts through the close of Last Trading Day, you will be subject to delivering (short positions) or taking delivery of (long positions) the full notional value of the futures contract.
For stock index futures traders, on Friday, Dec. 17th, the Dec. ’21 futures contracts will officially halt trading and the exchange will cash settle all open positions at 8:30 A.M., Central Time.  Thursday, December 9th marked the traditional date traders started rolling Dec. stock index futures trades to the next quarterly futures contract and the new front month: also March ’22. Come forward to the new front month for the next ±90 days.
Finally, for financial futures traders (Ultra bonds, 30-yr. T-bonds, 2-, 5-, 10-yr. T-notes, etc.) the traditional roll-over day was Nov. 30th/First Notice Day (the date all open LONG positions became subject to delivery). The next front month – and now by far the more liquid – is also March ’22. For all longs and shorts not in the deliverables market, it’s time to trade March ’22 contracts.
The March exchange symbol for all these futures contracts is “H.” Check for the appropriate complete symbol for these new front month futures contracts on your trading/charting software. Make sure your quotes, charts, DOM’s are set to the correct futures contract month.
 Keep in mind the following:
  • Currencies are DELIVERABLE and you must be out and trading March as of today, Friday Dec. 10th
  • Stock index futures are cash settled on Friday Dec. 17th at 9:30 AM Eastern Time.
  • During the rollover period, especially with stock index futures, I noticed that the first few days will have two sided, volatile action. Think about it, you have large traders and institutions who are NOT day traders and carry large positions as speculation or a hedge and now they need to rollover from Dec. to March.
  • In my opinion, counter trend methods, mean reversion techniques can work better during rollover period but one must be very aware as past performance is not indicative of futures results.
  • Keep in mind, back in the days, many floor traders would “trade the spread” specifically with different techniques. I believe some traders still do using the screen.
  • Bottom line is know that this is rollover period, do research on past rollover periods, start trading the March contract and good trading and happy holidays!

Rollover Notice for US Stock Index Futures / Currencies / Financials – March Contract 2022

Dear Traders,

Rollover Notice for US Stock Index Futures / Currencies / Financials

Friday December 10th is rollover day in US stock index futures. Currencies and Financial Markets.

Starting Monday many traders will start trading the March 2022 contract rather than the December 2021 contract.

Symbol for March is H.

Example: ESH22

The rollover period will be complete by next Friday when December contracts expire into cash.

Here are a few pointers from a Cannon Trading Broker:

With the volume looking to change in the equity indices my recommendation is to make sure you are trading strategies on larger time-frames till the end of this week. If using volume indicators be more cautious on the data that has been gathered. The December contract will start rolling into the March over next few days until the December futures expire next Friday, December the 17th.  tomorrow. I recommend switching your charts and trading to the December month by days end.

Introduction to the Norden Method & Support and Resistance Levels 12-10-2021

Get Real Time updates and more on our private FB group!
I read the following by Gary Norden and www.nordenmethod.com ** the other day in the introductory part and I thought to myself – “How true!” and got permission to share:
Before any trader starts to trade a contract he/she should learn as much as possible about it. In order to construct a good watchlist you will need to know how your market correlates with other markets; what connections it has with the world around it. Some correlations work on many days while others just pop up as important from time to time (e.g. oil for bonds).
Know about the Participants…
Who trades the market? What is the average proportion of small retail traders vs. larger pros?
Take a moment for example, to think about whether the ES has a higher or lower proportion of retail traders than 10-year Treasuries?
Know about your Sessions…
Don’t just consider the main session, we should also think about out-of-hours trading. We have many clients who trade the ES, for example, during European hours.
Trading correlations can be a greater help also during out-of-hours, but we need to be more watchful of liquidity and two-way flow (discussed later).
Know about your Expirations…
Understand the dynamics of your contract around its expiry.
We should stop trading as soon as we see rollover activity until completed, and then move onto the next contract.
Cash settled contracts tend to rollover later than physically settled ones, but you need to learn when your market does this.
Know the News drivers…
Understand what news events drive your market and when they come out.
We usually don’t want to trade over scheduled news and data announcements.
Know the Holidays…
Learn the effect of scheduled holidays on your market.
For example, if you are in the US and are trading the Dax, you need to be aware of German public holidays.
Know the Underlying Market…
You should be seeking information about your underlying market(s).
Remember, futures are a derivative. They derive their price from the underlying market.
Basically, learn as much as you can about your market; become an expert in it. You would be amazed at how many traders lose money on silly (and avoidable) things related to a lack of knowledge.
Important: Trading commodity futures and options involves a substantial risk of loss.

Take a look at Sugar & Futures Support and Levels 12.09.2021

Take a look at Sugar

by Mark O’Brien, Senior Broker
As with the first report on the Friday after the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, the Omicron variant has settled into a dominant market force. News in the next few weeks could result in near-term trends in a long list of commodities – in the form of significant euphoria events or aggressive risk-off plunges similar to ones already seen since Nov. 24th. With that said, global markets – and traders – can also keep an eye on other big-picture fundamentals that can be more important drivers of price. Take for example sugar. Since the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, sugar prices have moved sharply to the downside, and reached a four-month low on December 2. sugar should still have a bullish supply outlook this season even if energy prices stay well below their recent highs. Brazil’s Center-South sugar production is expected to decline more than 6 million tonnes from last season, a deficit that cannot be offset by other producing nations. With the market well below its November highs, sugar could see a significant recovery in the face of any Omicron news.
Important: Trading commodity futures and options involves a substantial risk of loss.

Advice from a Seasoned Broker w/ Current Market Conditions & Support and Resistance Levels 12.08.2021

I am often asked by clients and prospects the following:
“I am not doing very well in my current trading – any ideas you can share?”
While the answer will vary from one individual to another based on their experience, risk capital, personality and much more, here are a few common themes one can explore and try to educate oneself:
  1. Try a different market. Many will trade the NQ and ES but perhaps trading markets like bonds, gold and crude oil will fit your situation better?
  2. Try using different time frames. Most common is use higher time frames and less leverage
  3. Get confidence using MICROS. Practice and confidence are extremely important. After a while demo lacks the main Ingredients: fear and greed. Trading live using MICROS can be a worthy extra step.
  4. Have you looked at using options for short term trading rather than futures?
  5. Have you explored trading futures alongside options and using the options as risk management?
  6. What about future spreads?
  7. Option Spreads?
The bottom line is that trading futures is a tough task but there are many different ways to try and get an edge. Not all ways will fit all traders. Learn, explore and try to find your niche.
