1. Market Commentary

Volume slowly trickling back, I expect that by Monday volume will return to “normal”.

Unemployment report tomorrow should move the markets.

Understanding the type of trading environment you are in is crucial.

Past two weeks markets were in “Holiday Mode” = lighter volume, narrower ranges etc.

Before that we had periods of higher volatility, wider ranges, higher volume.

Different types of market environments require adjusting your approach.

Here is a small write up I share with my webinar subscribers:

My opinion is that there are 3 main types of trading days.

1. Most common is two sided trading action with swings up and down – this type of trading day is most suitable for the main aspect of this model, which is taking trades based on the arrows.
2. Strong trending day, mostly one directional – this type of trading day is the least common, many times will happen on Mondays and maybe 3-5 times a month at most – this type of trading day is most suitable for using the color scheme I have on the charts. Green bars mean strong up trend, red bars mean strong down trend. If you determined that this is a trend day, then use pull backs to enter with the direction of trend and use the parabolic (little dashes) as you trailing stop.
3. Slow and/ or choppy trading day – this type of trading day is best suited for taking small profits from the market by either using the main model or taking the diamonds as entry signal, going for quick profits and tight stops.

Good question is how can one asses what type of trading day we will have while the market is still trading….I am doing some work about it and will be happy to hear feedback via email but here are some initial observations:
Was the overnight session a wide, two sided trading range? If the answer is yes, good chances for similar trading day during the primary session ( primary session is when the cash/ stock market is open)
Mondays have the highest chance for trending days
The behavior of the first hour of trading can also suggests the type of action for the rest of the day.
If the first 30 minutes have good volume, better chances for type 1 or type 2 trading days.
low volume during first 30 minutes can suggest a choppy (type 3 trading day)

1. Market Commentary

This week’s “Top 5 Commodities to Watch”, an article written by Cannon Trading’s senior broker John D. Thorpe, was featured on the Financial Edge section of Investopedia. John introduces Gold, Live Cattle, Corn, Sugar, and energies like Crude Oil, Unleaded Gas and Heating Oil as the commodities to watch over the next month. He then breaks down why investors should be paying attention, citing a variety of international price pressures, seasonal tendencies, and recent government data.

1. Market Commentary

Volatility remains high and what I wrote the last few days, still holds:

As far as the daily chart, I am now confused again….I got tempted on the short side and got burnt very quickly today….Once again there is a CASE for both sides, bulls and the bears and the potential for a BIG MOVE EITHER WAY is greater than normal as we are sitting on important price levels in the SP500, which has been the leader for the rest of the markets as of the last few weeks. FRONT MONTH FOR EQUITIES AND BONDS IS DECEMBER

SYMBOL FOR DECEMBER IS Z

From a technical perspective, Dec. Mini Sp must hold above 1130.00 to have a chance of a meaningful bounce, a break below that level and we should test 1071.25 which is the equivalent for the Sept. lows of 1077.

Have a great weekend and be ready for a full, volatile trading week coming up.

Futures Trading Levels, Crude Oil as a Leader of Commodity Prices

Cannon Trading / E-Futures.com

Crude Oil has been moving the rest of the commodities sector the last few months and has influence on all futures.

Thought I would share a daily chart for review, along with a screen shot of the crude oil set ups I share in my daily live day-trade signals service.

As far as longer term direction for crude, I will need to see which level we can break out first, 104.91 on the upside or 94.54 on the downside. In between, you have wide 410 trading range ( equal to $10,000 per one contract against you or in your favor….)

Cannon Trading Inc. Day Trading Webinar

General Notes:
At any given day, one must understand the trading environment that specific day has to offer and adjust their trading style accordingly. In our case it relates more to the size of stops and target based on volatility. Some days the market gives us many opportunities; some not as much; and some days it provides us with mostly risks…….take what the market gives you and not what you want it to give…..

I think if a trader understands early enough what type of trading day it is, he or she can choose which tools from the webinar are most suited for that days trading. If one can do that successfully (which is not easy), I think that is half the battle.

Not taking a trade is better than a bad trade.

My opinion is that there are 3 main types of trading days.

  1. Most common is two sided trading action with swings up and down – this type of trading day is most suitable for the main aspect of this model, which is taking trades based on the arrows.
  2. Strong trending day, mostly one directional – this type of trading day is the least common, many times this will happen on Mondays and maybe 3-5 times a month at most – this type of trading day is most suitable for using the color scheme I have on the charts. Green bars mean strong up trend, red bars mean strong down trend. 3. Slow and/ or choppy trading day – this type of trading day is best suited for taking small profits from the market by either using the main model or taking the diamonds as entry signal, and going for quick profits and tight stops.

Either way, higher volatility, wider ranges = trader must asses their daily risk settings, their stops/ targets per trade, trading size etc.
