A good read to share with you as i believe traders should be exposed to as many different strategies as possible so they can use the one that fits their personality, risk capital and time the best.
this one is on using weekly options:
Trading 102: Weekly Options as Trading Weapon by John Thorpe
There are 100’s of indicators available to traders to assist with decision making that can be applied to technical analysis, which is precisely the reason to utilize a sound and inexpensive weekly ES strategy to compliment a day trading strategy.
  1. There are two main uses for the Weekly options: As a hedge, possibly no need for stops
  2. As a pure speculation. A relatively inexpensive way to speculate on market direction in a time frame that can be for minutes, hours or a few days without the need to use stops.

Do I hold on for the “big winner” or take small profits? & Trading Levels 10.31.2019

Do I hold on for the “big winner” or take small profits?
To start with, this is a good problem…this means you are taking some winning trades. The answer is not a simple yes or no.
One must have a combination of both smaller, consistent winners. Also a few “runners” large profit trades, regardless if you are day trading, position trading or swing trading.
Some traders solve the problem by breaking their trading size into more than just 1 unit.
Entering Multiple Contracts: Philosophy
I think that entering multiple contracts does 3 good things for you…
Reduces fear…
Reduces greed…
And gives you a chance to hang in there for the large winners or what I call a “runner”….
In order to enter multiple contracts while day trading, one has to have the appropriate risk capital and margin requirements ( MICROS are great for this purpose in my opinion). But the advantage of trading more than one “unit” or splitting your trading size into two or more parts is as such:
If you enter a trade with one contract (or if you are treating your trading size as one unit, meaning you enter a trade with 4 contracts and exit the trade with 4 contracts), you can face a very quick dilemma, especially when day-trading. Consider the two following scenarios:
1. You get in and very quickly you are up 2 mini SP points…what do you do? Do you take profit? Bring your stop loss closer? How do you avoid getting out too early or too late?
2. You enter a trade and it goes against you rather quickly…if you get out then it is a loser…but the little voice in your head says “what if the market goes back up?”
In the first case scenario, when the market decided to be nice to us and moved in our direction, I like to exit half of my positions relatively quickly. In the case of the mini SP, this would be around 7 ticks profit.
What I’ve found is that this will allow me to manage the rest of the trade in a much more relaxed manner. Since I’ve already locked profits in, now I can look for a proper stop close to my break-even level. I can analyze my next target more realistically and, if the market provides room for additional gains, be there to participate.
I really think that traders need to give the “runners” (large winners, directional moves) a chance. Obviously, these don’t happen often but if you know the market you’re in (crude versus the mini SP for example) and you look at recent volatility, and behavior you may decide that you will give the chance of a large winner when you are in crude oil trade because the market has been trending and the volatility gives you a chance for a good “runner” (maybe 60 ticks if you are trading a range bar chart, maybe $1.40 or so if you are trading using the hourly chart).
In the second case scenario, I can choose to risk a smaller amount or use a tight stop on the first half of my position and a bit wider stop on the other half of the position. This can help prevent the scenario when one does not get out of a trade because mentally one does not want to accept the loss.
Of course, there is much more to trading and day trading. Entry signals, exit techniques, why and when to get in a trade, and so on — all of these are key.
On the same token you may look at scheduled reports and recent price action (or lack of) in the SP and decide that you will be taking mostly small profits until the market environment changes.
I hope that this tip will assist you while trading and will prevent some of the instances where you get out of a trade too late or too early.

FOMC tomorrow. FED watch tool by CME shows the countdown, the odds and more.
Right now it seems like 90% that Fed will lower rates by 0.25%….
The following are my PERSONAL suggestions on trading during FOMC days:
·    Reduce trading size
·    Be extra picky = no trade is better than a bad trade
·    Choose entry points wisely. Look at longer time frame support and resistance for entry. Take the approach of entering at points where you normally would have placed protective stops. Example, trader x looking to go long the mini SP at 2925.00 with a stop at 2919.00, instead “stretch the price bands” due to volatility and place an entry order to buy at 2919.75 and place a stop a few points below in this hypothetical example ( consider current volatility along with support and resistance levels).
·    Expect the higher volatility during and right after the announcement
·    Expect to see some “vacuum” ( low volume, big zigzags) right before the number.
·    Consider using automated stops and limits attached to your entry order as the market can move very fast at times.
  • Keep in mind statement comes out at 1 Pm Central time, the news conference which dissects the language comes out 30 minutes later so the volatility window stretches out.
·    Know what the market was expecting, learn what came out and observe market reaction for clues
·    Be patient and be disciplined
·    If in doubt, stay out!!

I have done this so many times before, my colleagues tell me when it happens to them as well as some of my clients….You have the perfect read on the market. The market actually ends up doing what you thought it would and in a BIG way…yet somehow you managed to LOSE money despite your perfect analysis. To me this is sometimes more frustrating than having a bad losing day.
What happened?
Poor trade management, that’s what happened.
Yes, reading the market well is a much needed quality if you plan on making money rather than contributing donations to the market but more important is how you manage the trade / position once you read the market. Much easier said than done, especially after the fact but here are some tips that I am hoping will assist you in the next time you have a good market read.
By the way, the reason to this quick trading tidbit is the stock market rally we saw today in stock indices. Both my colleague and I “had the right analysis” on this possible rally yet he managed to lose and get stopped out twice while I took a small piece of the rally BUT not nearly as much as I should have….
1.      You don’t have a crystal ball. To think you can buy an ES contract in this volatility and use a 2 point stop in hopes of making 20 points profit is a very low probability event…you would need to buy it at the PEREFECT time for this to happen. Point is, with higher volatility you need to use WIDER stops to give yourself a chance. That may mean using SMALLER trade size.
2.      If you are able to, share your read with another trader, it may provide you with a better perspective just by sharing.
3.      If you think there is room for a big move or what we call a “runner” – be prepared to for the pullbacks. Use multiple time frames to gain a better perspective and hang in there for the big move, if this is what you think can happen.
4.      If you have enough risk capital, try to use multiple contracts, example buying 2 rather than 1. Taking profit on the first part of the position will help you relax and look at what the market is really telling you rather than what you would like it to say. It helps reduce both the fear and the greed.
5.      “Plan your trade, trade your plan”
Again these are just some short pointers, written quickly after today’s session in hopes of helping you when you face a similar situation.

Tomorrow we have a full day. Starting with ECB and followed by more than a few reports that can move different markets, including the housing report.
Trending day?
Volatile day?
“quiet day”?
Knowing what type of trading day we are in is big but also hard to predict until the day unfolds….
Different methods and trading concepts will do better in different type of trading days.
Understand what type of trading day is most suitable for your trading style and trading techniques.
Perhaps have a few diff. type of “attack plans” for diff. type of trading days.
Last but not least I like following more than a few markets and I try to follow markets that are some what different, like ES and ZB ( 30 yr bonds), crude oil and gold, mini or micro nasdaq.

A Guide to Opening a Futures Account

Since the 19th century, and as early as the 18th century in Japan, futures trading exchanges have been a way to establish a fixed price for goods to be exchanged at a later date. Establishing these contracts can provide either sensible protection for the goods you need, or a lucrative investment when trading contracts themselves. Futures contracts, however, are very risky and have become a complicated endeavor as they have evolved. This guide will help you to understand the futures trading market and expanding your investment portfolio by opening a futures account.

What are Futures Contracts and How do They Work?

A futures contract is simply an agreement to buy or sell a specific asset at a later date for a pre-established price. The key is that these agreements are standardized and will trade on an exchange. The two parties will agree that the buyer will buy the given quantity of securities or the commodity, while the seller agrees to provide and deliver it at a fixed date and price. The reason for this is to avoid wild price swings in either direction among more volatile assets. For example, a manufacturing company that may need oil for their production may want to set up a futures contract. They will always need oil to run their business, so they will want to ensure that they are protected by locking in a fixed price for the asset in case prices go up. This strategy is known as hedging and is used in industries to protect the price of goods that are necessary for running their business.

In addition to hedging, one can also participate in speculating by buying and trading futures contracts themselves. Speculators have no need for the underlying commodity being traded. Instead, a speculator will carefully watch market trends and price movements of particular assets to make their decision. Without the need for any one asset in particular, a spectator will buy and sell futures contracts themselves with the goal to make a profit. If the price of an asset goes up, a futures contract with a locked-in lower price becomes more valuable, allowing the owner to sell it for more in the futures market. Opposite from hedgers who seek to save money, speculators are in the market to wager on price movements and will never actually see the asset being traded.

How to Trade Futures

Once you have decided on which strategy is right for you, and your commodity, you will need to open a futures account with a broker that supports that market. A broker will help to mitigate the risk you will be taking in the futures market. They will work with you to set up your strategy based on your experience with investing, your income and net worth. A broker will also help to guide you with careful research and advice. They will act as your safety net and as your advisor in the futures trading market.

Choosing Your Commodity or Asset

If you are not hedging, you will not have a need for any one asset in particular. So where do you start? While physical commodities such as oil, fuel, agriculture, or metals represent a large portion of the futures market, there are also futures contracts for many intangible assets such as ETFs, bonds, or bitcoin. The goal is to choose an asset that you anticipate will go up in the future. Predicting this increase is no easy feat. It takes careful planning and a close eye on the market you are looking to invest in to notice these trends and when they occur. We suggest partnering with your futures broker for this. Working as a team, you will be able to notice market trends and the ebb and flow of price movement for your chosen asset.

Understanding What Goes Into Your Futures Contract

As mentioned earlier, standardization is key when drafting futures contracts. Both parties must agree upon the parameters set out in the contract before it can move forward. These parameters will typically include:

  • The quantity of goods and unit of measurement being used,
  • Whether the trade will be settled through a physical delivery or a cash settlement,
  • The currency unit in which the contract is denominated and quoted
  • The grade or quality of the good if it is applicable.

Be careful that all parameters of the contract are firmly agreed upon by all signing parties, especially if you are a casual trader. Your futures broker is here to assist you and make sure that you clearly set out these agreements early. By doing this, you avoid getting delivered low-quality goods as a hedger and avoid having to sign for thousands of gallons of oil as a speculator when the contract runs out.

Risks Involved with Trading Futures

Ultimately, futures contracts were designed to reduce the risk of producers, consumers, and investors. However, when speculation, a large risk is involved. It is often necessary for speculators to have to borrow a substantial amount of money to magnify small price movements. This is inherently risky as it is based on a prediction. If your prediction is wrong, you could wind up losing more money than you initially invested.

With an increasingly large risk involved, navigating futures contracts can be daunting. Cannon Trading will help you to get started by partnering you with a professional futures broker. Our professional team members will help to advise you on which platforms and which investments are right for you, whether as a hedging opportunity or as a means to profit as a speculator. We will help to advise you on all of your trading needs and questions when they arise with our extensive background and knowledge of futures trading. Don’t go it alone, start your futures trading journey with expert assistance from Cannon Trading.
