Non Farm Payroll also known as Monthly unemployment figures will be released tomorrow before the cash open ( 5:30 Am pacific time or 7:30 Am central time).

This is a market moving report and my guess is that stocks, bonds, metals and energies will have some wild swings as traders try to position themselves based on the data released.

May started with some of the European markets closed or abbreviated due to “May Day”. Nice up move on stocks and nice down move on bonds/ 10 years.  I mentioned this before on how I like bonds and 10 years as another market to observe and day trade.  It has a different personality and behaves quite differently than stock index futures ( many times inverse correlation), energy or metal futures.

Interest Rates, 10 year and 30 year.

In most platforms, the symbols are ZB for 30 year bonds and ZN for 10 year notes. The current front month is June which is M. So ZBM6 for example.

Product Symbol ZB
Contract Size The unit of trading shall be U.S. Treasury Bonds having a face value at maturity of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) or multiples thereof
Price Quotation
Points ($1,000) and 1/32 of a point. For example, 134-16 represents 134 16/32. Par is on the basis of 100 points.
 
Product Symbol ZN

Another VOLATILE FOMC…Federal Reserve Press Release
Press ReleaseRelease Date: April 27, 2016For release at 2:00 p.m. EDT

Information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in March indicates that labor market conditions have improved further even as growth in economic activity appears to have slowed. Growth in household spending has moderated, although households’ real income has risen at a solid rate and consumer sentiment remains high. Since the beginning of the year, the housing sector has improved further but business fixed investment and net exports have been soft. A range of recent indicators, including strong job gains, points to additional strengthening of the labor market. Inflation has continued to run below the Committee’s 2 percent longer-run objective, partly reflecting earlier declines in energy prices and falling prices of non-energy imports. Market-based measures of inflation compensation remain low; survey-based measures of longer-term inflation expectations are little changed, on balance, in recent months.

The week started out a little slow and on lower volume than normal as I think market awaits FOMC this Wednesday.

We do hve a few important reports tomorrow that may provide for some more movement ahead of the rate decision on Wednesday.

I do think that markets have patterns that repeat themselves, the question is when does it happen and how to act on it when it does and how to protect yourself when it does not.

There are certain days of the week, certain days with reports that can increase chances for behavior one way or another. Sometimes just knowing when we have higher chances for higher volatility can help one be more prepared for the trading day.

I mentioned before about crude oil trading extra volatile right around 8 Am and 1:15 PM central time ( right around the open of the old pit and before the close of the old pit). There are days when energies may have some very large moves during these last 15 minutes.

Why I like to use tick and volume charts for scalping

Today I decided to touch more on an educational feature rather than provide a certain market outlook.

Many of my clients and blog readers know that when it comes to short term trading I am a fan of using volume charts, tick charts, range bar charts and Renko charts rather than the traditional time charts like the 1 minutes, 5 minutes etc.

My rule of thumb is that if you as a trader make decisions based on charts that are less than 15 minutes time frame, it may be worth your time to research, back test and do some homework as to potentially using other type of charts like volume charts , Range charts etc.

Volume charts will draw a new bar once a user defined number of contracts traded. Example mini SP 10,000 volume chart will draw a new bar once 10,000 contracts traded.

Range bar charts will draw new charts once price action has exceeded a user pre define price or ticks range. Example might be an 18 ticks range bar chart on crude oil.

ECB rate decision tomorrow along with some other reports.

This is the European equivalent to our FOMC…the only difference it comes out quite early…7 AM central time.

Be aware of the reports and by now you should know if certain reports are favorable for your style of trade or vice versa.
