5. Economic Reports for Wednesday August 1, 2012

Hello Traders,

August Gold is entering delivery period, so if you are trading gold, make sure you start trading December gold. Symbol for December is Z.

The FOMC interest rate decision is due at 2:15 ET in the US tomorrow ( Wednesday, Aug. 1st ). Also more than a few economic numbers ahead of the announcement.

FOMC days have different characteristics than other trading days. If you have traded for a while, check your trading notes from past FOMC days that may help you prepare for tomorrow.

If you are a newcomer, take a more conservative approach and make sure you understand that the news can really move the market.

The following are suggestions on trading during FOMC days:

  • Reduce trading size
  • Be extra picky = no trade is better than a bad trade
  • Choose entry points wisely. Look at longer time frame support and resistance for entry. Take the approach of entering at points where you normally would have placed protective stops. Example, trader x looking to go long the mini SP at 1365.00 with a stop at 1359.00, instead “stretch the price bands” due to volatility and place an entry order to buy at 1359.75 and place a stop a few points below in this hypothetical example.
  • Expect the higher volatility during and right after the announcement
  • Expect to see some “vacuum” ( low volume, big zigzags) right before the number.
  • Consider using automated stops and limits attached to your entry order as the market can move very fast at times.
  • Know what the market was expecting, learn what came out and observe market reaction for clues
  • Be patient and be disciplined

Hello Traders,

August Gold is entering delivery period, so if you are trading gold, make sure you start trading December gold. Symbol for December is Z.

On a different note: If you are a day trader, how do you prepare for the trading day?

Do you simply turn on the machine and start trading? I hope not…

Here are a few pointers I recommend my clients as preparation for the trading day:

↔Know what reports are coming out that day

↔Overview of longer time frames (daily, hourly, 30 minutes)

↔Key support and resistance levels

↔Go over your equity run and make sure your statement is correct

↔Make sure your surroundings will enable you to trade

↔Fit trading into your schedule, life style not vice versa

↔Do you have a daily loss limit? Profit target?

These are just a few things any daytrader should do in order to be better prepared for the trading day. As always if you need any personalized feedback, feel free to visit our trader profile page or email me.

Hello Traders,

Comforting words out of Europe helped the stock market bounce nicely today.

Also the end of the month is approaching, which in recent months we saw some rallies during the last few days of the month.

With that being said, I still think the market has equal chances of going either way. You can see my daily chart below with possible upside targets (marked with -3-) and possible downside targets (marked with -4-).

5. Economic Reports for Thursday July 19, 2012

Hello Traders,

We have a day full of reports tomorrow and SP500 is sitting against resistance at 1275. I would treat this as a pivot point, i.e. if we break and close above it based on the hourly chart, then there is a chance for another leg up. On the flip side, failure to do so may open the door for a pull back. To be honest I do not have a strong feeling one way or the other. My advice when this happens is PATIENCE! Let the market develop and provide you with clues.
Once you know how you want to attack the market, devise a plan and then execute the plan that you made while you were calm and not under market pressure OR in simple words, plan your trade, trade your plan.

5. Economic Reports for Wednesday July 18, 2012

Hello Traders,

Somewhat of an intraday reversal we witnessed in the mini SP 500 today and market closed
ABOVE yesterday’s high which is a semi bullish signal
and puts the next target for the SP500 at 1375.

Another market that caught my eyes today is the Euro currency. I am getting a small buy signal as well for the Euro with possible targets at 123.96 and 125.34 and stop somewhere below the recent low of 121.71 ( 121.35?) in case I am wrong. If I am wrong and the market does take out the recent low, we may see another leg down before this market bounces.
