NASDAQ 100 Futures
Daily chart of NASDAQ100 futures ( NQ and the MICRO MNQ) below for your review.
March is now the FRONT month. NQH21.
While volatility is not as high as it was in March / April, we are still witnessing very large moves both ways.
Current trend is up but market looks a bit overbought and ready for a possible correction. Please see chart for potential support and resistance levels.
With the high volatility we are seeing, I would highly recommend looking at the MICRO contracts including the MICRO NQ which is 1/10th the size of the mini NASDAQ. The symbol is MNQ and you can read more about the MICROS here.

Trading 202: Futures Options Writing
Have you ever wondered who sells the futures options that most people buy? These people are known as the option writers/sellers. Their sole objective is to collect the premium paid by the option buyer. Option writing can also be used for hedging purposes and reducing risk. An option writer has the exact opposite to gain as the option buyer. The writer has unlimited risk and a limited profit potential, which is the premium of the option minus commissions. When writing naked futures options your risk is unlimited, without the use of stops. This is why we recommend exiting positions once a market trades through an area you perceived as strong support or resistance. So why would anyone want to write an option? Here are a few reasons:
  1. Most futures options expire worthless and out of the money. Therefore, the option writer is collecting the premium the option buyer paid.
  2. There are three ways to win as an option writer. A market can go in the direction you thought, it can trade sideways and in a channel, or it can even go slowly against you but not through your strike price. The advantage is time decay.
  3. The writer believes the futures contract will not reach a certain strike price by the expiration date of the option. This is known as naked option selling.
  4. To hedge against a futures position. For example: someone who goes long cocoa at 850 can write a 900 strike price call option with about one month of time until option expiration. This allows you to collect the premium of the call option if cocoa settles below 900, based on option expiration. It also allows you to make a profit on the actual futures contract between 851 and 900. This strategy also lowers your margin on the trade and should cocoa continue lower to 800, you at least collect some premium on the option you wrote. Risk lies if cocoa continues to decline because you only collect a certain amount of premium and the futures contract has unlimited risk the lower it goes.

Sugar daily chart below. Sugar futures have good volume and in my opinion are a good market for swing trading type of activity.
Sugar is traded on ICE so real-time quotes are not as easily obtained.
Sugar futures got a little sweeter these past few weeks, mainly due to US$ weakness.
Current levels to try an evaluate if this pullback is a pullback or more…
1413 is next major support basis the March Contract.

Trading 101: Knowing What You Don’t Know in Trading Markets
From our friend Jim Wyckoff at JimWyckoff.com
The headline of this educational feature may be a bit confusing, but I will explain what I mean shortly. First, I want to reiterate that trading futures, stock and FOREX markets is not an easy undertaking. It disgusts me that there are a few unsavory people in our industry that portray trading as an easy, get-rich-quick scheme, or as some endeavor for which there are “secrets” to be learned from those who hold “trading secrets.”
Folks, the plain truth is that there are no trading secrets and no easy paths to quick success in trading markets. Beware of anyone who tries to tell (or sell) you such. One of the biggest obstacles to success in trading markets is a lack of knowledge and understanding of the process of trading. The “process of trading” includes understanding financial leverage, market behavior and trader psychology. Understanding the process of trading can be achieved with perseverance and a willingness to continue to learn.
It’s not coincidental that trading markets is similar to most other human endeavors: Hard work and experience are required to achieve notable success. A person who enjoys classic automobiles would not attempt to tear down and successfully rebuild an engine without having some previous experience, or without having learned about the workings of an automobile engine—including knowing about the tools involved in the operation

Dr. Copper
Copper and copper futures have a special place in the commodity futures universe. As one of the most important industrial and building materials in the world, copper’s market price is seen as an important fundamental economic indicator for not only the health of the U.S. economy, but also for the robustness of the world’s economy as a whole. In fact, because of copper’s generally accepted importance as an economic indicator in predicting and reflecting over-all economic health, it is ascribed to be the only commodity with a doctorate degree in the field of economics, hence the title, “Dr. Copper”. Cannon Trading’s brokers affectionately call out the words “Dr. Copper” when referring to copper’s present price and market movements, amongst themselves, in a cheerful genuflecting to the respect we believe this commodity and futures contract deserves. Copper’s recent market trading range /trend can be observed in the daily chart below.

Trading 101: Ranking Market Events ( knowing what you don’t know…)
by: Cannon Trading Staff
Every trader has done it. You’ve done it, your friends have done it, even your broker has done it at one point early in their career.
Here’s the scenario:
You’ve finally finished your futures education at Cannon Trading Company. You’ve done you’re homework on stops, limits, indicators and price movements for the market you’re trading. You’re ready to go, you enter your limit order and you wait.
**DING**
You get filled. Your heart rate picks up, a wry smile crosses your face and you begin to imagine the possibilities of the one trade you’re in: How much can I make? How much can I lose before it’s too much? You’ve waited through months of technical trading and deep meditation to get here, and now it’s finally paying off with one of your first trades in the live market. Sayonara paper trading; aloha live futures.
Then, all of a sudden, the top of the hour hits and the market starts acting up. It’s getting more volatile and more volatile; it’s picking up speed and taking an unforgiving turn against you. You can’t think straight, all you can think about is your losing position that could get worse and worse as the seconds go by. You race to put in a stop order, but you finally have to settle for a market order just to stop the bleeding. You stare.
**DING**
You’re out of the market. What the hell just happened? You stare at the screen; did your indicators lie to you? Is your system faulty? Did you not listen to your broker? Well, probably not. But you’re down several handles, you’ve lost some money and your pride is aching…

Each market has a different personality, different behavior along with different times of the day when it is most active. If you are finding that the ES (mini SP) is not giving you enough risk/opportunities then start monitoring a couple of other markets and perhaps explore them in demo / simulated mode.
I think that there are more than a few markets that are suitable for day-trading. Below you will find some observations, tips along with what are unique about these markets, personality and most active trading hours (interest rates, mostly the ten year and 30 year).
In most platforms, the symbols are ZB for 30 year bonds and ZN for 10 year notes.
Product Symbol
ZB
Contract Size
The unit of trading shall be U.S. Treasury Bonds having a face value at maturity of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) or multiples thereof
Price Quotation
Points ($1,000) and 1/32 of a point. For example, 134-16 represents 134 16/32. Par is on the basis of 100 points.
Product Symbol
ZN
Underlying Unit
One U.S. Treasury note having a face value at maturity of $100,000.
Deliverable Grades
U.S. Treasury notes with a remaining term to maturity of at least six and a half years, but not more than 10 years, from the first day of the delivery month. The invoice price equals the futures settlement price times a conversion factor, plus accrued interest. The conversion factor is the price of the delivered note ($1 par value) to yield 6 percent.
Price Quote
Points ($1,000) and halves of 1/32 of a point. For example, 126-16 represents 126 16/32 and 126-165 represents 126 16.5/32. Par is on the basis of 100 points.
Tick Size
(minimum fluctuation)
One-half of one thirty-second (1/32) of one point ($15.625, rounded up to the nearest cent per contract), except for intermonth spreads, where the minimum price fluctuation shall be one-quarter of one thirty-second of one point ($7.8125 per contract).
Contract Months
The first five consecutive contracts in the March, June, September, and December quarterly cycle.
These contracts are often affected by many of the economic reports that come out at 8:30 AM Eastern and there is very active volume between the hours of 8 AM EST and 3 PM EST
Volume on both contracts is very good. Ten years will often have 1 million contracts traded per day (might be the second most active US futures market after the mini SP 500) and the bonds will avg. around 300,000 contracts.
These markets can experience very volatile movements during and right after different reports but then will often trade smooth or in an intraday trend the rest of the day.
Spread traders may find some interesting strategies trading the ZB/ZN spread or what I refer to as the 30/10 and some call NOB spread ( notes over bonds).
120 minute chart of the ZB or 30 yr bonds for observation below.
