Crude Oil numbers tomorrow morning. As of lately it has been one of the more followed reports by all markets…..

I wrote this piece about day trading crude oil futures a couple of years ago and it is still very valid in my opinion:

Trading 102: Day Trading Using fear and greed ( using Crude Oil futures as an example)

Crude Oil Futures volatility offers a “different market personality” than stock index futures. Here is some of the things you need to know about day trading crude oil futures:

By: Ilan Levy-Mayer, Cannon Trading Commodities Broker & VP

Crude Oil is one of MY favorite futures markets for day trading. Before I dive in and share with you how the volatility in crude oil fits my risk tolerance for day trading and provide a couple of chart examples, we should review some of the specifications of Crude Oil Futures.

Crude Oil Futures have monthly expiration. So each month we trade a different contract month, so one needs to know when the first notice day and last trading day for crude oil futures are, in order to always make sure we are trading the proper month with the most liquidity and avoid any chance of getting into a delivery situation.

Next is the contract size. Crude Oil futures are based on 1000 barrels. To be honest from a day trading perspective all I care is that each tick or 1 cent fluctuation is $10 against me or in my favor per contract. That means that a move from 92.94 to 92.74 = $200.

Looking at the calendar of reports on section 3 below and I think we  may have a volatile, big day tomorrow across many markets.

We have OPEC meeting, Crude Oil numbers ( postponed from today due to memorial day ). Natural gas numbers, ECB rate, challenger job report here, UK exit or not to exit the EU vote and more…..Should be an interesting day.

Make sure you are aware of the different times of reports/news events and how they can affect the specific markets you are trading.

Sell in May and go away…did not happen….at least so far. Stocks finished the month strong and markets overall were somewhat quiet today, considering this was the last trading day of the month. Perhaps tired from the long weekend we had here in the US.

Won’t stay quite for long. We have EU rate decision early Thursday and monthly unemployment here in the US on Friday so I do expect volatility and volume to pick up.

I wish all of you a great trading month in June!

Trading Algos

What are the trading algos?

Through my job as a broker I have spent 100’s of hours researching the markets in attempt to gain an “edge” and be able to assist my clients better. The results are a family of studies and trading conditions I programed and tested, that i feel comfortable using to analyze the markets. I use my ALGO’s in different ways in the trading program REN18 and I use them also when looking at the markets in different time frames.

Obviously there is more to trading than just studies. There is trade management, entry and exit techniques, fear and greed and much more….but I hope that you can evaluate the studies/ ALGOs and decide if it can be of help in your trading.

I currently have 3 main ALGOS I use in my managed accounts and offer for clients to use either with E-Futures, Sierra charts or CQG charts ( both CQG IC and CQG Q trader) – all charting packages offers free trial.

Diamonds: DIAMONDS are an algorithm I came up with as I was designing different trading systems. It is a proprietary algorithm that tries to measure exhaustion in selling or buying and possible chance of short term reversal. The ALGO calculates recent highs/lows, consecutive highs/lows, RSI, volatility and then the formula outputs; a number that either meet certain criteria or not. RED diamonds suggest possible short term top. Green or blue diamonds suggest possible short term bottoms. Like any other indicator, trading strategy, we simply don’t know what the future will bring, in our case the next few minutes, sometimes seconds…hence the use of the term “suggested”.

ILM: ILM produces arrows on the charts that signal potential change in direction/ momentum. The ILM is based on moving average, volatility system and momentum.

F50: The F50 tries to measure institutional activity that may lead to continued momentum within larger time frame. It looks for correlation with volatility systems and attempts to sense possible continuation of immediate trend.

I like to use my studies and ALGOS on either volume and range bar charts when it comes to short term trading and 15 minutes, hourly and daily charts when it comes to longer term day trading as well as swing trading.

Hello Traders,

Strong trend day today on both indices going up and gold going down, prompts me to share a piece I have shared in the past about recognizing the different type of trading days (both markets above experienced type 2 trading day today):

  • My opinion is that there are 3 main types of trading days.
    1. Most common is two sided trading action with swings up and down – this type of trading day is most suitable for using support and resistance levels along with overbought /oversold indicators.
    2. Strong trending day, mostly one directional – this type of trading day is the least common, many times will happen on Mondays and maybe 3-5 times a month at most – this type of trading day is most suitable for using ADX, MACD crossovers and pretty much looking for pullbacks to jump on the trend
    3. Slow and/ or choppy trading day – this type of trading day is best suited for taking small profits from the market by looking at volume spikes, using stochastics as possible entry signals and usually wait for a pullback before jumping in. Many times, no trading is better than bad trading during these type of trading days….
  • Good question is how can one asses what type of trading day we will have while the market is still trading….I am doing some work about it and will be happy to hear feedback via email but here are some initial observations:
    1. Was the overnight session a wide, two sided trading range? If the answer is yes, good chances for similar trading day during the primary session ( primary session is when the cash/ stock market is open)
    2. Mondays have the highest chance for trending days
    3. The behavior of the first hour of trading can also suggests the type of action for the rest of the day.
    4. If the first 30 minutes have good volume, better chances for type 1 or type 2 trading days.
    5. low volume during first 30 minutes can suggest a choppy (type 3 trading day)
