Option trading has two main components – puts and calls. While the call option is used for the option of buying a certain futures contract, the put option is for the option of selling them. Another terminology used in options trading is strike price. This strike price is the price at which the underlying asset is confirmed to be bought or sold when the trader exercises the option.

There are a few other noteworthy items about option trading and each one is important. Take for example the expiration date of the option and the option style, so on and so forth. Once you understand the terminology, you will be able to understand options trading clearly.

One thing to remember about options is that they are comparatively less liquid than futures contracts. For those who analyze the markets thoroughly and regularly, options trading is just a great way of controlling risks. Big moves in the markets today as we anticipated yesterday. Crude oil up over $4 along with it’s products heating oil and unleaded gas.

Gold down another $15, bonds resumed the downward trend with close to two full points down and stocks showed the first sign of weakness in a few days….

The volatility in some of the markets encouraged me to remind you about the weekly options available for markets like mini SP, gold, Crude, Bonds and others.

While options have their advantages and disadvantages…when the markets are so volatile they present an alternative to trading with out the need to use stops that have higher chances of getting hit when markets move like they did today…..

Weekly Mini S&P option contracts

There are 100’s of indicators available to traders to assist with decision making that can be applied to technical analysis, which is precisely the reason to utilize a sound and inexpensive weekly ES strategy to compliment a day trading strategy.

There are two main uses for the Weekly options
  1. As a hedge, no need for stops
  2. As a pure speculation. A relatively inexpensive way to speculate on market direction in a time frame that can be for minutes, hours or a few days without the need to use stops.

Weekly options:

In the last few years the CME group added weekly options to a variety of markets. It started with the highly liquid mini SP 500 contract and then trickled down to other markets such as crude oil, gold, bonds, grains and currencies to name a few.

So what’s the big deal you may ask as there are many different futures contacts and options contracts listed on more than a few global exchanges?

From my point of view, the weekly options are a great tool for short term traders to have in their trading arsenal for two main reasons:

  1. Ability to use these weekly options as a way to speculate on the direction of the markets without the need to use stops.
  2. The weekly options offer the short term traders who use futures an alternative to placing stops by using the options as protection/insurance.

If you ever day-traded futures or traded futures for short term duration ranging from hours to days you know that trading without a stop is detrimental for your physical and financial well being…yet that being said many of us got stopped out to see the market coming right back to where we thought and wanted it to move towards…. My name is Ilan Levy-Mayer and I am the Vice President and Senior Futures Broker at Cannon Trading. I came up with the following personal observations after serving online traders worldwide for more than 17 years.

8 Steps to Successful Day-Trading

The following steps are guides to progress, and are not necessarily in sequential order. Some of them are always required, but each futures trader is different and will relate to these stages in their own ways. While attempting to learn and progress, one must keep in mind that futures trading is risky and can involve significant losses.

1. Education

Hopefully if you are already trading you have completed your initial education: contract specs, trading hours, futures brokers, platforms, the opportunities as well as the risk and need to use risk capital in futures, and so on. Understanding this information is essential to futures trading. The second type of education is ongoing: learning about trading techniques, the evolution of futures markets, different trading tools, and more.

2. Find a System

I am definitely not advising you to go on the web and subscribe to a “black box” system (using buy/sell triggers if don’t know why they are being generated). What I am advising is developing a trading technique: a general set of rules and a trading concept. As you progress, you may want to put the different rules and indicators into a computerized system, but the most important factor is to have a focus and a plan. Don’t just wake up in the morning and trade “blank.”
