Hello Traders,

For 2016 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

Greetings!

Trade management is more important than Market Analysis….

I have done this so many times before, my colleagues tell me when it happens to them as well as some of my clients….You have the perfect read on the market. The market actually ends up doing what you thought it would and in a BIG way…yet somehow you manage to LOSE money despite your perfect analysis. To me this is sometimes more frustrating than having a bad losing day.

What happened?

Poor trade management, that’s what happened.

Yes, reading the market well is a much needed quality if you plan on making money rather than contributing donations to the market but more important is how you manage the trade / position once you read the market. Much easier said than done, especially after the fact but here are some tips that I am hoping will assist you in the next time you have a good market read.

Hello Traders,

For 2015 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

Wishing all of you a great trading month in December.
My name is Ilan Levy-Mayer and I am the Vice President and Senior Futures Broker at Cannon Trading. I came up with the following personal observations after serving online traders worldwide for more than 17 years.

8 Steps to Successful Day-Trading

The following steps are guides to progress, and are not necessarily in sequential order. Some of them are always required, but each futures trader is different and will relate to these stages in their own ways. While attempting to learn and progress, one must keep in mind that futures trading is risky and can involve significant losses.

1. Education

Hopefully if you are already trading you have completed your initial education: contract specs, trading hours, futures brokers, platforms, the opportunities as well as the risk and need to use risk capital in futures, and so on. Understanding this information is essential to futures trading. The second type of education is ongoing: learning about trading techniques, the evolution of futures markets, different trading tools, and more.

2. Find a System

I am definitely not advising you to go on the web and subscribe to a “black box” system (using buy/sell triggers if don’t know why they are being generated). What I am advising is developing a trading technique: a general set of rules and a trading concept. As you progress, you may want to put the different rules and indicators into a computerized system, but the most important factor is to have a focus and a plan. Don’t just wake up in the morning and trade “blank.”

Hello Traders,

For 2015 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

Hello Traders,

The first trading day of June 2015 was a wild ride in many markets….almost as if the markets were quite confused on the direction for the month and traded very choppy with “unexplained, fast moves” both ways. I saw this in stock index futures, metals, currencies and even the grain sector…

As traders we need to learn how to adapt quickly, sense what type of trading day is developing in front of us and trade accordingly.

I wrote the following a while back and shared it before but worth sharing again as refresher:

  • In my opinion there are 3 main types of trading days.

1. The most common day are two sided trading action with swings up and down – this type of trading day is most suitable for using support and resistance levels along with overbought/oversold indicators.

2. Strong trending days, mostly one directional – this type of trading day is the least common, many times will happen on Mondays and maybe 3-5 times a month at most – this type of trading day is most suitable for using ADX, MACD crossovers and pretty much looking for pullbacks to jump on the trend.

3. Slow and/or choppy trading days – this type of trading day is best suited for taking small profits from the market by looking at volume spikes, using stochastics as possible entry signals and usually wait for a pullback before jumping in.

500 experienced futures brokers were asked what caused most futures traders to lose money when comes to trading futures.

Their answers reflected the trading experience of more than 10,000 futures traders. Download the PDF and find out what they said.

1.) Have a Plan

Many futures traders trade without a plan. They do not define specific risk and profit objectives before trading. Even if they establish a plan, they “second guess” it and don’t stick to it, particularly if the trade is a loss. Consequently, they overtrade and use their equity to the limit (are undercapitalized), which puts them in a squeeze and forces them to liquidate positions. Usually, they liquidate the good trades and keep the bad ones.

Separator

2.) News Factor

Many traders don’t realize the news they hear and read has, in many cases, already been discounted by the market.

Separator

3.) Trade Objectively

After several profitable trades, many speculators become wild and nonconservative. They base their trades on hunches and long shots, rather than sound fundamental and technical reasoning, or put their money into one deal that “can’t fail.”

4.) Know Your Size

Traders often try to carry too big a position with too little capital and trade too frequently for the size of the account.

Hello Traders,

Interesting action in the markets post FOMC. Sell offs in metals and indices, bounce in energies.

I have a feeling May will be a volatile month ahead.

Quick look at  mini Russell 2000 chart below. This index made new all time highs April 15th, tried to test the high again this week and failed and the momentum right now is with the bears, at least in the short term and at least for now….Some levels if the sell off continues as well as some upside levels if we bounce.
