US) Preview

: Fed Minutes from Oct 27-28 FOMC Meeting due at 14:00 ET (19:00 GMT)At its late October meeting the FOMC decided against rate liftoff again. They did, however, remove language about international developments impeding a rate hike decision after they had used worries about the global economy as an excuse to refrain from rate action in September. To help justify the decision to not raise in October, the committee noted that the pace of job gains had slowed.

The key phrase that Fed-watchers latched on to was a specific reference to the “next meeting” as being live for a rate hike decision: “In determining whether it will be appropriate to raise the target range at its next meeting, the Committee will assess progress–both realized and expected–toward its objectives of maximum employment and 2 percent inflation.”

Hello Traders,

FOMC came out today without much change from previous language.

Many times the true reaction to FOMC is the next day. I have seen that more than a few times in the past.

If pattern of last few meetings hold, we may see a bit more of a rally before turning around late Thursday or Friday….but then again, past performance is not indicative of future results….

Plan your trade, trade your plan. Don’t forget money management can be more important than the actual buy or sell signals etc…

Hello Traders,

For 2015 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

Hello Traders,

The FOMC interest rate decision is due at 14:00 ET in the US tomorrow ( Wednesday, July 29th ).

FOMC days have different characteristics than other trading days. If you have traded for a while, check your trading notes from past FOMC days that may help you prepare for tomorrow.

If you are a newcomer, take a more conservative approach and make sure you understand that the news can really move the market.

The following are suggestions on trading during FOMC days:

  • Reduce trading size
  • Be extra picky = no trade is better than a bad trade
  • Choose entry points wisely. Look at longer time frame support and resistance for entry. Take the approach of entering at points where you normally would have placed protective stops. Example, trader x looking to go long the mini SP at 2085.00 with a stop at 2079.00, instead “stretch the price bands” due to volatility and place an entry order to buy at 2079.75 and place a stop a few points below in this hypothetical example.
  • Expect the higher volatility during and right after the announcement
  • Expect to see some “vacuum” ( low volume, big zigzags) right before the number.
  • Consider using automated stops and limits attached to your entry order as the market can move very fast at times.
  • Know what the market was expecting, learn what came out and observe market reaction for clues
  • This is another great example why a trading journal would be an asset, as you can go back and check your notes from previous FOMC days.
  • Be patient and be disciplined

Hello Traders,

For 2015 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

Hello Traders,

Wild day in the markets with FOMC anticipation and after.

I noticed wild moves across almost all markets. Bonds, stocks, metals, energies, currencies and even the grains had a little spike…..

My personal opinion is that experienced, disciplined traders can do well on these crazy volatile days and that newcomers should stay out but who knows…maybe the experience, disciplined traders choose to stay out right before and right after the report….would be a good survey question.

The day post FOMC is usually when one can tell the real direction of the markets, as larger institutions and traders digest the news and position themselves accordingly. I think we may see another volatile day tomorrow, so adjust accordingly.
