Hello Traders,

For 2014 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

Monthly unemployment numbers coming out tomorrow morning, 7:30 AM central time. This is definitely a market moving report that normally injects high volatility into indices, financials, currencies, metals and even the energies.

I personally do NOT trade until after the report and this is what I recommend my clients but as long as you are aware and ready, you can make your own decisions.

Below you will see a 1 minute chart of the mini SP 500 from the last monthly unemployment back in February 7th 2014 just to get an idea of the moves prior and after the report, notice the 26 point move during the 1 minute bar right when the numbers came out!!!:

EPH4 - E mini 500, Max 14, 1 Min.

Walk Before You Run

By Cannon Trading staff

The image of a successful futures trader is that of a lone wolf surveying the landscape looking for an opportunity to attack and seize quick and substantial profits. We all know about the potential for making a fortune in the futures markets. Yet, few do so. Why is that? What are some of the common pitfalls that prevent this dream from becoming a reality for most traders?

One of the most prevalent misconceptions for inexperienced traders is that they believe themselves to be smarter than the rest of the market participants. They under estimate the qualifications and abilities of the rest of the futures markets professionals. This business of trading is dominated by very dedicated, resourceful professionals who have invested lots of time and assets into their pursuit of trading profits. Competing against these seasoned professionals is not impossible but going it alone, especially initially, is usually not the most prudent course of action for new traders.

When we were children, we learned to walk before we learned to run. This is true for most of our life experiences. We played t-ball before we played baseball. We took lessons from Arthur Murray before we entered dance competitions. We watched cooking shows or read cookbooks before we attempted to deep fry our first turkey. So, why do so many novice traders think that they should enter into the world of futures trading without the support of an experienced futures broker? Why, armed with their computers and quote systems do they think that they are equipped to go it alone and be successful? It isn’t logical. It goes counter to our collective life experiences.

If your goal is to trade independently, why not do so after acquiring valuable experience and insight by working with a seasoned professional broker? Someone who is already fully engaged in the futures markets. Why not begin by using a mentor, a teacher, an advisor who can supply ideas, guidelines, disciplines, and insights that the novice trader could not otherwise be exposed to? We all learned to drive with the help of an instructor, why not approach the futures markets in a similar fashion? Your hard earned capital is at stake. Getting an education can be a very expensive process, especially in the futures business. Why not take advantage of the help offered by an experienced professional? Help like this can shorten a new trader’s learning curve and reduce the cost of his or her tuition for this education.

Hello Traders,

For 2014 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

Each market has different personality, different behavior along with different times of the day when it is most active. If you are finding that the ES is not giving you enough risk/opportunities then start monitoring a couple of other markets and perhaps explore them in demo / simulated mode.

I will try over the next few blogs to shed some light on other markets i think are suitable for day-trading along with what is unique about these markets, personality and most active trading hours.

Today I am going to start with interest rates, mostly the ten year and 30 year.

In most platforms, the symbols are ZB for 30 year bonds and ZN for 10 year notes. The current front month is March which is U. So ZBH4 for example.

Product Symbol ZB
Contract Size The unit of trading shall be U.S. Treasury Bonds having a face value at maturity of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) or multiples thereof
Price Quotation Points ($1,000) and 1/32 of a point. For example, 134-16 represents 134 16/32. Par is on the basis of 100 points.
Product Symbol ZN

Underlying Unit One U.S. Treasury note having a face value at maturity of $100,000.
Deliverable Grades U.S. Treasury notes with a remaining term to maturity of at least six and a half years, but not more than 10 years, from the first day of the delivery month. The invoice price equals the futures settlement price times a conversion factor, plus accrued interest. The conversion factor is the price of the delivered note ($1 par value) to yield 6 percent.
Price Quote Points ($1,000) and halves of 1/32 of a point. For example, 126-16 represents 126 16/32 and 126-165 represents 126 16.5/32. Par is on the basis of 100 points.
Tick Size
(minimum fluctuation)
One-half of one thirty-second (1/32) of one point ($15.625, rounded up to the nearest cent per contract), except for intermonth spreads, where the minimum price fluctuation shall be one-quarter of one thirty-second of one point ($7.8125 per contract).
Contract Months The first five consecutive contracts in the March, June, September, and December quarterly cycle.

These contracts are often affected by many of the economic reports that come out at 8:30 Am Eastern and there is very active volume between the hours of 8 am EST and 3 PM EST

Volume on both contracts is very good. Ten years will often have 1 million contracts traded per day ( might be the second most active US futures market after the mini SP 500) and the bonds will avg. around 300,000 contracts.

These markets can experience very volatile movements during and right after different reports but then will often trade smooth or in an intraday trend the rest of the day.

Another BONUS for trading these two markets is that the exchange fees are lower, hence making your total transaction cost cheaper!

Follow these two markets in demo mode for a while if you have not traded them before and get a feel for the movement, reaction to reports, execution etc.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Below is a 60 minute chart of the US bond market or what i refer to as the 30 year bonds ZBH4. The dollar value difference per one contract between the high and the low marked on the chart is: $1661.50 per one contract.

ps: if you like a trial of the indicators you see in the chart, please email me.

Hello Traders,

For 2013 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

Big moves took place last night when the markets reopened in reaction to news about Syria, but by the time the markets closed today, most of the markets went back to levels from Friday session, so we are still waiting to see the actual direction for many different markets. I am sure we will see some whipsaw both ways over the next few days.

In the field of day-trading, my tip for today is:

Try to limit the amount of time you are trying to day-trade as well as try to choose the RIGHT period of time during the day to day-trade.

I think the more hours one spends in front of the charts trading, the higher chances one has to be prone for mistakes, frustration and more.

The other part is to choose the right period of time in the day for the markets you trade. Different markets have different period of times during the day when they are more active, perhaps more volatile etc.

This also has to coincide with your schedule and other constraints.

Hello Traders,

For 2013 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

December is now the front month for stock index futures. The symbol for December is Z, so if you are trading the mini SP you need to start trading ESZ3.

Also currencies will switch over to December as of tomorrow, make sure you are careful as currencies can be assigned delivery notice after this Monday.

If you have any questions, please contact your broker.

Hello Traders,

For 2013 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

I was asked today ( and many times before…) what I think are the top two reasons so many traders lose money day-trading?
My answer was ” if I had to pick the top 2 reasons, it would be: 1. Inability to accept losses 2. Over leveraging the already leveraged futures contracts”

Each one of these topics deserves quite a bit of ink but until I expand on each and other factors I believe are contributors, I recommend reading the following:
