Trump Vs. Powell Moving the Markets

By Mark O’Brien, Senior Broker

General:

crypto

As the saying goes, “You can’t fight fundamentals.” It’s the idea that even if technical analysis suggests one thing, fundamentals will override the direction of an asset’s movement. There are numerous fundamentals traders keep an eye on, like economic indicators, weather, supply and demand dynamics, the seemingly endless news and information.

One fundamental indicator taking a front seat lately is almost any time U.S. president Trump steps up to a microphone and answers questions from members of the press, particularly on the subjects of the economy, tariffs, trade agreements with other countries and the like. Possibly more than any president in recent memory, the current one has put forth statements that markets have reacted to with outsized price moves. This is not likely to change anytime soon, so day traders be on the look-out for presidential press conferences and be prepared.

Metals:

Case in point from above: August gold futures thrust up ±$50 per ounce to a $3,385.80/oz. high intraday reacting to the latest case of President Trump raising the prospect of removing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell from office. Today the president suggested he could attempt to remove Powell “for cause,” arguing the central bank spent too much money on renovations of two historic office buildings.

Back story: The Fed board approved the construction project in 2017, and the latest renovations began three years ago. The project has faced cost overruns in part because of unforeseen construction conditions including more asbestos than anticipated, toxic contamination in the soil and a higher-than-expected water table.

Economists and financial analysts have warned that a central bank that is more responsive to short-term political demands than long-term economic stability could over time lead to significant capital flight and periods of greater economic or financial instability.

Crypto:

A series of debates starting Monday in the U.S. House of Representatives, deemed “crypto week,” caused Bitcoin futures to surge to a new all-time intraday high Monday, to $123,610, capping a nearly 15% surge over the past month.

The debates are looking at crypto-friendly legislation making its way through Congress that could ease regulatory complexity long viewed as an impediment for the industry.

September Crude Oil

September crude oil completed its second upside PriceCount objective last month and corrected lower. At this point, IF the chart can resume its rally with new sustained highs, the third count would project a potential run to the 84.43 area.

Post FOMC

by Mark O’Brien, Senior Broker

General:

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday announced that it will leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged as policymakers continue to monitor inflation and the labor market amid elevated levels of economic uncertainty.

“Uncertainty about the economic outlook has increased further,” the Fed indicated in its FOMC Statement. “The Committee is attentive to the risks to both sides of its dual mandate and judges that the risks of higher unemployment and higher inflation have risen.”

The central bank’s decision leaves the benchmark federal funds rate at a range of 4.25% to 4.5%.

It comes after the Fed left rates at that level at its two previous meetings in January and March, which followed three consecutive rate cuts at its preceding meetings – which involved a 50-basis-point cut in September and a pair of 25-basis-point reductions in November and December.

Metals:

June gold futures ended April closing nine days with a >$100 per ounce price range, a $10,000 per contract move between its daily high and low trades. Five trading days into May and we’ve already seen two more, with a couple of >$80 ranges thrown in.

Energies:

June crude oil traded intraday Monday – on the Sunday opening – to $55.30/barrel and closed at the lowest in four years ($57.13 a barrel back in February 2021), after OPEC+ agreed to hike production for a second month. The eight producers in the group, led by Saudi Arabia, agreed on Saturday to increase output by another 411,000 barrels per day in June. The decision comes one month after OPEC+ surprised the market by agreeing to boost production in May by the same amount.

July Bean Oil

July bean oil broke out into a new high last month but was unable to sustain the move and now the chart has activated downside PriceCounts on the correction lower. The first count projects a possible slide to the 46.44 area.

The PriceCount study is a tool that can help to project the distance of a move in price. The counts are not intended to be an ‘exact’ science but rather offer a target area for the four objectives which are based off the first leg of a move with each subsequent count having a smaller percentage of being achieved.

It is normal for the chart to react by correcting or consolidating at an objective and then either resuming its move or reversing trend. Best utilized in conjunction with other technical tools, PriceCounts offer one more way to analyze charts and help to manage your positions and risk.

FOMC: Shocking Decision Just Sent Gold Soaring: 3 Big Reasons Why

9dc1e02e d5f7 4ff4 abf7 1df60775f196

Market Highlights

by Mark O’Brien, Senior Broker

The Day After FOMC

fomc

FOMC Meeting Update

The FOMC left interest rates unchanged today.  In language newly added to its policy statement, “Uncertainty around the economic outlook has increased.”  Surveys of consumers and businesses, corporate earnings, and financial markets, albeit “soft data,” have suggested that the economic ground may be shifting beneath our feet.  Last Friday, the University of Michigan’s preliminary survey of consumer sentiment for March sank for the third straight month, showing sharply lower expectations for the future – regardless of respondents’ party affiliations.  Warnings have percolated from airlines and retailers, i.e. Dollar General and Walmart, about underwhelming consumer demand.  Outplacement firm Challenger Gray & Christmas announced layoffs reached their highest levels since the summer of 2020, when the pandemic was in full force — and the highest level for the month of February since 2009. That’s all for the FOMC for now.

Metals:

Gold prices edged higher to hover near all-time highs on the heels of Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s post announcement press conference.

Weekly Newsletter #1031: Knowing What You Don’t Know in Trading Markets, Copper Futures Daily Chart & Futures Levels 12.07.2020

Cannon Futures Weekly Letter Issue # 1031

Trading 101: Knowing What You Don’t Know in Trading Markets
From our friend Jim Wyckoff at JimWyckoff.com
The headline of this educational feature may be a bit confusing, but I will explain what I mean shortly. First, I want to reiterate that trading futures, stock and FOREX markets is not an easy undertaking. It disgusts me that there are a few unsavory people in our industry that portray trading as an easy, get-rich-quick scheme, or as some endeavor for which there are “secrets” to be learned from those who hold “trading secrets.”
Folks, the plain truth is that there are no trading secrets and no easy paths to quick success in trading markets. Beware of anyone who tries to tell (or sell) you such. One of the biggest obstacles to success in trading markets is a lack of knowledge and understanding of the process of trading. The “process of trading” includes understanding financial leverage, market behavior and trader psychology. Understanding the process of trading can be achieved with perseverance and a willingness to continue to learn.
It’s not coincidental that trading markets is similar to most other human endeavors: Hard work and experience are required to achieve notable success. A person who enjoys classic automobiles would not attempt to tear down and successfully rebuild an engine without having some previous experience, or without having learned about the workings of an automobile engine—including knowing about the tools involved in the operation

Dr. Copper
Copper and copper futures have a special place in the commodity futures universe. As one of the most important industrial and building materials in the world, copper’s market price is seen as an important fundamental economic indicator for not only the health of the U.S. economy, but also for the robustness of the world’s economy as a whole. In fact, because of copper’s generally accepted importance as an economic indicator in predicting and reflecting over-all economic health, it is ascribed to be the only commodity with a doctorate degree in the field of economics, hence the title, “Dr. Copper”. Cannon Trading’s brokers affectionately call out the words “Dr. Copper” when referring to copper’s present price and market movements, amongst themselves, in a cheerful genuflecting to the respect we believe this commodity and futures contract deserves. Copper’s recent market trading range /trend can be observed in the daily chart below.
