Trading 201: Adjust your Trading with Volatility

Unemployment report along with Omicron along with an already “very spicy markets” encouraged me to share some of the following pointers.
Hope it helps.
*While I have no idea were the market is going from day to day, minute to minute, week to week etc. I do know that in the past, some of the sharpest and largest rallies were short covering after a large sell off. More often than not market sell offs and volatility like we are seeing do not end up as V type of action but more like U or W when it is all said and done.
*Expect the unexpected…
* Have an idea of what you are looking to do, keep in mind possible risk and have a game plan. Now more than ever, plan your trade and than trade your plan!
* Think money management, hedging risk while you are still trying to figure out how to profit.
* Know what is going on, reports, current margins, current limits and more.
  • Consider short term options instead of futures and/or MICROS
*Trade smaller. The bands are much larger. Watch the VIX.
* DO NOT assume anything…if you are not sure, contact us and we will try our best to assist with the combined, vast experience we have here as a team.
* Wash hands, take this seriously and do your best to stay healthy….
My colleague, John Thorpe, Ex floor broker, contributed the following on the VIX and the VVIX:
We recommend all stock indices intraday traders to keep an eye on the VIX for directional clues and study, many of you have access through other means to view this critical trading barometer, VIX now trades 5 days per week ,23 hours per day. if you need to add the VIX data to your trading platforms , it’s 3 bucks per month, penny wise and pound foolish if you don’t. Contact your broker on how to add the Volatility Index traded through the CBOE to your trading platform

Good Trading

Trading Futures, Options on Futures, and retail off-exchange foreign currency transactions involves substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for all investors.  You should carefully consider whether trading is suitable for you in light of your circumstances, knowledge, and financial resources. You may lose all or more of your initial investment. Opinions, market data, and recommendations are subject to change at any time when it comes to Futures Trading.

5. Futures Economic Reports for Friday September 9, 2016

Greetings!

Front month for stock indices is December!!

I looked for some news that may explain the large sell off Friday and almost the same level of bounce today….I saw a few things but must admit none made sense to me, so my clients who are “conspiracy theory believers” may have won this one…..

I saw something about Fed officials speaking today “infused confidence back”, saw another thing that Friday was due to North Korea nuclear tests…yet another explanation spoke about rollover. Another news flash spoke about possibly removing some of the stocks from the financial segment of the SP500, specifically “good performing real estate stocks from the financial/ banking sector…..not to mention the “9/11” effect….and more and more etc. etc…..

My guess is the FED once again too concerned with keeping stock market prices higher than the paying attention to the rest of the economy…..I feel that QE in general and other FED action created artificially higher stock market prices which will one day explode in a violent way. But that is a topic for a whole new discussion.

Bottom line is I have no explanation but here is what the hourly and daily charts look like:

Hello Traders,

For 2015 I would like to wish all of you discipline and patience in your trading!

Volatility is skyrocketing. This is a completely different environment for trading than you were in 3-4 weeks ago. Markets are evolving and you must adapt your trading to changing market conditions.

This is where you find out if the gambler in you is stronger than the trader in you or vise versa…. If the trader is the strong one, you will REDUCE trading size, become extra picky in your entries , perhaps even decide not to trade at certain times…. If the gambler is the dominant one… You will find yourself all over the place up huge, down huge and I am sorry to say sooner or later you will blow up…..

Think about it and try help the trader within win over the gambler that resides in the same neighborhood…..

On a different note, please pay attention to LIMIT moves and understand what happens when the market is halting at limit levels:
