Tomorrow is Friday the 13th……
iSystems – Let the ALGOs do the heavy lifting
iSystems is a trading platform that allows you the investor/trader to browse and view performance from over 1500 professionally designed systems.
You can browse statistics, performance, logic and much more.
A series 3 professional broker is here to assist you if you would like to evaluate any specific systems and even better how to create a diversified portfolio based on your risk profile and capital.
The capital requirements for each Algo range from just $3000.00 and up.
You can choose between day trading Algos and swing trading Algos and much more….
In today’s post I like to share the following 2 systems:
These systems can be started/stopped at anytime by you! You have full control.
Our brokers are more than happy to discuss diff. systems with you, risks, opportunities, risk tolerance and much more and try to assist you.
Some clients like to have some automated systems in addition to their self directed account, some clients prefer to only utilize automated systems as they don’t have the time or desire to trade on their own.
Futures trading is complex and carries the risk of substantial losses. It is not suitable for all investors. The ability to withstand losses and to adhere to a particular trading program in spite of trading losses are material points which can adversely affect investor returns.

Good Trading

Trading Futures, Options on Futures, and retail off-exchange foreign currency transactions involves substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for all investors.  You should carefully consider whether trading is suitable for you in light of your circumstances, knowledge, and financial resources. You may lose all or more of your initial investment. Opinions, market data, and recommendations are subject to change at any time when it comes to Futures Trading.

I have been telling clients that with recent volatility, one of the biggest adjustments a trader has to make is the trading size. With NQ moving 400-500 points per day and ES sometimes moving 100 points per day, there is nothing wrong with using the MICRO contracts to allow you a bit more staying power, ability to trade smaller because of the wider bands etc.
I have been recently using MICRO NQ, MICRO ES, mini crude, MICRO gold, mini Silver ( SIL) and a few other smaller contracts with good volume simply because I want o base my trading on the chart, price action, support levels etc. and many don’t have the ability to risk 500 NQ points on a swing trade for example ( $10,000) but with a MICRO NQ the risk now becomes a $1000 which allows for better sleep and decision making in my eyes.
Want to learn more about the MICROS and which markets have MICROS that are liquid, the symbols etc? – CONTACT a SERIES 3 broker.
PS: Crude numbers are tomorrow at 11 AM EST ( since today was Veterans Day

COVID-19 Impact on Futures Trading

Futures Trading

The sweep of the coronavirus around the world ranks as one of the most impactful events in decades. Due in large part to sweeping lockdowns of businesses, travel and social activities, global markets, particularly commodity markets, have experienced price disruptions on an unprecedented scale. Recall earlier this year, the front month crude oil futures contract (May) traded at a value below $0.00 per barrel and at the close of trading one day, its price settled at a negative value. Conversely, gold’s December futures contract recently reached an all-time high above $2,000 per ounce. These price moves and similar ones – in silver, copper, stock indexes like the S&P 500, Nasdaq & Dow Jones, lumber and others – can be at least partly attributed to abrupt changes in supply & demand patterns during this international health crisis and its effects on producers’ and consumers’ behavior.

In this environment, the case could be made to review trading strategies and make adjustments – in market selection (think “full-sized” vs. mini- or micro- contracts), risk parameters – both in terms of dollar value and price toleration – market selection/allocation, trade frequency and for automated systems, adjustments to algorithms. All this would be to expect a continuation of the last several months’ market movement/volatility.

As part of a strategy review, it would be a good idea to also be aware of any price limits or circuit breakers in place for the markets you’re trading. A price limit is the maximum price range allowed for a futures contract for a trading session. At those price limits, trading may halt for a period of time and an expanded price limit is set, or it may be stopped for the day. Circuit breakers are price limits that when hit, set a timer within which the market is restricted from moving beyond the price limit. In some markets, price limits and circuit breakers are based on percentage moves from the prior day’s closing price and thus are recalculated each day.

Grains and livestock futures contracts, for example, have daily price limits that remain in place for an entire trading session. Stock indexes have both price limits that remain in place for an entire trading session and several circuit breakers: ones that are in place overnight and others that work only during the day. During high volatility periods of time, if markets trade to circuit breakers or price limits, orders placed during at that time can be rejected by the exchange. In summary, knowing these price parameters is especially important.

For more information on how CME Group price limits and circuit breakers work, visit this link.

For specific CME Group price limits and circuit breakers, visit this link.

During this time, it’s more important than ever to be informed, aware and prepared. One of the best means available to help you is access to an experienced, knowledgeable broker. Not only do they have answers to questions regarding the items discussed above, they can look at your situation specifically and offer strategy guidance as well as educational material and information sources you may have overlooked, couldn’t find, or were unaware even existed. Contact Cannon Trading Company.

COVID-19 Impact on Futures Trading

  • Increased volatility and risk
  • New traders needed to understand limit down/ limit up
  • Wild overnight swings
  • Wild moves both ways
  • MICROS are a valid tool
  • Twitter is now a factor
  • More than ever an experienced broker is an asset

We appreciate all the Veterans and their service!! Tomorrow is Veteran’s Day here in the US. Markets are open as usual.
Trading size and discipline are kicking in even more than normal times.
Article below, I HOPE can assist some commodities traders:
Trading 102: To Become a Successful Commodities Trader, you Must Learn How to Lose…
Important NOTE: With The Recent Volatility Across Markets, We Have Seen Margins Increase In Some Markets As Well As Wild Swings And Extreme Volatility In Many Others. For Some, It Can Cost The Full Account Value But Doesn’t Need To. These Volatile Times Require MAJOR Adjustments In How You Approach Trading And Risk Management. I Hope This Article Helps And I Encourage You To Utilize Our Brokers And The Knowledge They Have To Assist You… Contact Us
Many different factors go into trading. Too many to discuss efficiently in one blog post. Some relate to trading techniques, other to money management, mental aspect, risk capital and much more.
But one that sticks in my eyes is the inability to accept a loss. I see many clients who can make money and have days where they make money but when they lose, they lose much more, sometimes even losing control and losing a big portion of their account.
I am not sure how a trader can embed this into their trading mind, BUT in my opinion if you train your brain to expect losses, understand losses and that losing days will happen, you will increase your chances of surviving in this business, which in return will actually give you a chance to succeed….
Losses are part of trading and as long as your losses are part of the plan and are quantified in advance and you can adhere to your rules, then you have a chance. I think it’s easy when commodities traders are winning…making money etc. Much harder when you lose or down. your brain starts playing tricks on you…it tells you to double down, maybe reverse even though your analysis does not say so….all of a sudden you start pulling trades out of instinct, fear rather than a calculated plan that has solid risk/ reward. If a trader learns how to lose, to accept losses, to have realistic expectations, then he/ she can avoid having one of those terrible days when traders can lose almost of all their account.
I went into this subject and detailed day-trading money management in an article I wrote a few years back for SFO magazine. You can read the full article

WOW…this trading day starting with the open on Sunday night, will go down in the history books as one of the most volatile day in stock index history as well as the day the Dow futures hits 30,000!
Position sizing is HUGE and very overlooked by most traders.
When the volatility bands widen like we saw today, your relative trading size should go LOWER!

Managing event risk around the 2020 US election
To help you navigate uncertainty, we take a look at how markets moved in 2016.*
By www.cmegroup.com
Elections and referendums with distinctly divergent market scenarios depending on the outcome of the vote can create significant event risk. That type of event risk is characterized by a binary choice: “A” or “B”, with both outcomes have meaningful probabilities such as 50-50 or 60-40. We saw this back in June of 2016 with the Brexit referendum: “Do we stay or do we go?” We also saw event risk in the US Presidential election in November 2016.
Election event risk has the potential to move markets once the outcome becomes known because pre-event, markets typically price the probability-weighted average of the two conflicting scenarios; that is, essentially the mid-point of the post-event scenarios. This means that once the outcome is known, the market will move quickly to the winning scenario.
The charts below depict how the 2016 election impacted multiple products and asset classes, all offered for trading by CME Group.

  • In 2016, price volatility spiked eight weeks prior to the election, followed by a downtrend.
  • In 2016, this downtrend stopped (and reversed course) on election day and in the days after.
  • Price volatility peaked on election night, and it took approximately 10 business days to revert back to the same levels as 10 days prior to the election.
  • The expanding trading range pattern prior to the election appears to be following a similar trajectory in 2020.
  • Despite the similarity in trend, the trading range in 2020 is wider compared to 2016.

  • In Gold, we saw a similar tightening of trading ranges, similar to E-mini S&P 500 and the 10-Year Treasury prior to the election.
  • In 2016, this downtrend stopped and reversed about 10 days prior to the election and spiked on election night.
  • Trading ranges of Gold are wider now compared to 2016.

MARGINS UPDATE:

Upcoming elections fear, COVID resurge and other factors really helped spike up volatility.
Most of Cannon clearing partners and risk managers have increased margins to full overnight or what we call 100% margins even during the day.
This does NOT apply to all platforms and clearing houses we work with. Some only raised margins for during the night session and some also raised margins through out the day.
Most platforms will provide a notice when you login regarding margins.
Cannon offers over 10 different platforms via 5 different clearing houses.
If you are a client who day trades and utilize day trading margins – PLEASE confirm with your broker what are the current margins based on the platform you use and the markets you trade.

During this Time:

*Expect the unexpected…
* Have an idea of what you are looking to do, keep in mind possible risk and have a game plan. Now more than ever, plan your trade and than trade your plan!
* Think money management, hedging risk while you are still trying to figure out how to profit.
  • Try to use preset brackets/ automated stops and limits etc. if you are able to with your software.
* Know what is going on, reports, current margins, current limits and more.
*Trade smaller. The bands are much larger. Watch the VIX. MICROS and smaller sized contracts like mini Silver and mini crude are good alternatives.
* DO NOT assume anything…if you are not sure, contact us and we will try our best to assist with the combined, vast experience we have here as a team.
* Wash hands, take this seriously and do your best to stay healthy….

Circuit Breakers:

I’ve received some questions about the price limits or circuit breakers we have seen mostly in stock index futures. Hopefully this explains things a bit better:
A price limit is the maximum price range permitted for a futures contract in each trading session.  When markets hit the price limit, different actions can occur depending on the product being traded. Markets may temporarily halt until price limits can be expanded, they may remain in a limit condition or they may stop trading for the day, based on regulatory rules.
This is for Stock Index futures but keep in mind MANY other markets are experiencing LARGE swings and moves.
Overnight limits (5:00 P.M. – 8:30 A.M., Central Time): the futures contract is limited to a 7% price move up or a 7% price move down, based on the futures contract’s prior day’s settlement price (3:15 P.M., Central Time).
If PRICE LIMITS hit 7% up or down and trading will cease until the NYSE cash market opens at 8:30am Central Time.
Further, if a contract market moves beyond +/- 3.5% within an hour during the overnight session, trading will be paused for two minutes.
If PRICE LIMITS hit 7% up or down and trading will cease until the NYSE cash market opens at 8:30am Central Time.
This applies to the main stock index futures contracts available, such as the ES, MES, NQ, etc.
What is so dangerous you may ask?
If you are long an ES during the night session and the market is limit down (7%) you can NOT get out. There is a chance that when the market opens up at 8:30 AM CDT that the market will then go down the 13% limit without you being able to exit. That means that on certain situations you can lose MORE than you have in your account.
